Abstract

A wrapper paper 23 for a smoking article having desirable ignition propensity and self-extinguishment characteristics, comprises a base web of paper 40, having a longitudinal direction and a transverse direction, and including at least one banded region 26 extending in the transverse direction while being spaced from one another in the longitudinal direction. The at least one banded region 26 includes starch and an anti-wrinkling agent selected from the group consisting of glycerin and propylene glycol. The weight ratio of the anti- wrinkling agent to starch in material added to the at least one banded region 26 is in the range of about 10% to about 120%. A smoking article provided with the wrapper exhibits improved self-extinguishment performance characteristics as compared to an equivalent smoking article having at least one banded region 26 that does not include an anti-wrinkling agent.
