Abstract

A process for producing an uncured but modified fibrous material from masses of lignocellulosic material, the fibres of such modified fibrous material being capable of heat activation to cure over time at a temperature or temperatures above 75 o. The process comprises: as a substantially dry process, subjecting the masses (whether after an optional pretreatment or not) to a steam environment at elevated temperatures above 165o and elevated pressures to chemically modify or lead to chemical modification by thermal hydrolysis of, at least in part, both the hemicellulose and lignin content of the lignocellulosic material masses; mechanically reducing the thus treated masses to individual fibres and/or smaller accumulations of fibres; and drying the mechanically reduced materials without heat activation to cure of the individual fibres and/or smaller accumulations of fibres or to a matted aggregation of the individual fibres and/or smaller accumulations of fibres.
