Abstract

A high voltage electrical cable includes a conductive core 2, surrounded by a semiconductive layer 3, oil impregnated insulation 4, and semiconducting layer 5. A layer of semiconducting tape 6 is wound around layer 5, and is interposed between layer 5 and metallic sheath 8. The tape layer 6 places the insulating layer 4 under pressure, and prevents the formation of voids in the insulating layer as the metallic sheath expands and contracts with changes in temperature.
