Abstract

An optical transmission fibre with a high effective area and low non-linearity coefficient ã has glass inner core 12 with a maximum refractive index difference Än1, a profile á and a radius r1. Surrounding the inner core, is a glass layer 14 with a maximum refractive index difference Än2 less than Än1, and with an outer radius r2. A second glass layer 16 surrounds layer 14, layer 16 having a maximum refractive index difference Än3 less than Än1 and with a width w. A low loss cladding 18 surrounds the layer 16. The absolute value of the refractive index difference Än2 is less than 10% of Än3, and the non-linearity coefficient ã is less than 2 W-1 km-1.
