C O.M PLETE SPECIFICATION
"Improvements in or Relating to a Hose Reel Mechanism"
WE CIVIL & CIVIC N.Z. LIMITED, a company duly incorporated under the laws of New Zealand, of 145 Symonds Street, Auckland, New Zealand hereby declare the invention for which I pray that a patent may be granted to me, and the method by which it is to be performed, to be particularly described in and by the following statement:
23 3 8 85
This invention relates to a hose reel mechanism.
It is an object of the present invention to provide a hose reel mechanism which will at least provide the public with a useful choice.
Accordingly the invention consists in a hose reel mechanism comprising;
a support frame positionable in a cavity;
a slideable frame movable in a translational manner on said support frame between positions within said cavity and substantially outside said cavity;
a rotatable reel member mounted on said slideable frame; said rotatable reel member able to carry a hose or the like in use;
said rotatable member being dimensioned and mounted on said slideable frame in such a manner such thab said rotatable member may be moved into, or out of, said cavity in use.
To those skilled in the art to which the invention relates, many changes in construction and widely differing embodiments and applications of the invention will suggest themselves without departing from the scope of the invention as defined in the appended claims. The disclosures and the descriptions herein are purely illustrative and are not intended to be in any sense limiting.
One preferred form of the invention shall now be described with reference to the accompanying drawings in which

invention.
Figure 2 is a perspective view of a housing according to one preferred form of the invention.
Figure 3 is a perspective view of a hose reel mechanism positioned outside the housing of Figure 2 according to one preferred form of the invention.
The invention relates to a hose reel mechanism which can be positioned in a cavity. The cavity can be substantially narrow and if the hose reel mechanism is made substantially narrow transversely is possible to position the entire apparatus within a narrow building member such as a 6" wide partition wall. For example, the hose reel mechanism may be positioned in a cavity formed between facings of a wall or the like. So that the hose reel 2 can accommodate a substantially long hose the hose reel 2 should be enlarged circumferentially.
The hose reel mechanism has a slideable frame 1. In the preferred embodiment, the slideable frame 1 comprises a pair of elongate horizontal members 3 and 4. The horizontal members 3 and 4 may for example be substantially L-shaped in cross-section. If desired, a vertical support 5 may be provided between the slideable members 3 and 4. Bracing members 6 may also be provided.
The horizontal members 3 and 4 are able to ride within rails 7 and 8 thus facilitating translational movement of the slideable frame 1. The rails 7 and 8 may thus form the support frame of the hose reel mechanism. The rails 7 and 8 are desirably attached to the inside surface of a cavity or a

housing 11. The rails 7 and 8 may consist of a web 22 adhered to the inside of the cavity or housing 11, and inwardly facing edges 9. Thus, the upright portion 15 of each of the horizontal members 3 and 4 is able to ride within the confines of the rails 7 and 8. Stops or the like should be provided so the horizontal members 3 and 4 do not completely disengage the rails 7 and 8.
A pivot pin 10 is provided. This may for example be substantially attached to the horizontal members 3 and 4.
The rotatable reel member 2, is mounted on the slideable frame 1. The hose reel 2 desirably has a circumferential groove 19. A hose or the like (not shown) can be positioned in the groove 19 in use.
The hose reel 2 may for example be attached to the pivot pin 10 by an attachment member 21. The hose reel 2 must of course be able to rotate about its attachment point in use.
A water supply 12 is provided and this may be in the form of a hose 14 which adjoins a tap 16. The tap 16 may be connected to the pivot pin 10 by an adaptor 20. The adaptor 20 may for example be pivotally connected to the pivot pin 10 and allow for pivotal action thereof. The pivot pin 10 may for example be in the form of a conduit so that water can pass therethrough in use.
In one preferred embodiment of the invention, the connection 21 between the hose reel 2 and the pivot pin 10 may also form the connection between the proximal end of the hose (not shown) and the water supply 12.
The hose reel mechanism is of a type such that it can be positioned directly in a cavity in a wall. A water supply 12 can be provided and the rails 7 and 8 can be adhered directly to

the inside surface of the cavity.
Alternatively, the hose reel mechanism is supplied within a housing 11 having an elongate door 17. The housing 11 can be conveniently positioned in a suitable cavity. Thus all that need be supplied is the water supply 12 and the apparatus can be connected therewith.
The use of the invention according to its preferred embodiment shall now be described.
In use, a cavity can be formed in the facings of a wall for example. The rails 7 and 8 can be attached directly to the inside surface of the cavity. Alternatively, the housing having the assembled hose reel mechanism can be positioned in the cavity. The slideable members 3 and 4 are positioned in the rails and the hose reel mechanism 15 connected to the water supply.
When the device is to be used, for example when an operator needs to extinguish a fire, the door 17 of the housing 11 is opened. The slideable frame 1 and rotatable reel member 2 are drawn translationally out of the cavity. The hose may then be drawn out from the hose reel 2. The hose reel 2 is able to swing out by rotating about the axis of the pivot pin 10. Thus, the hose reel 2 can move to a position wherein the circumferential groove faces substantially in the same direction to which the hose is being drawn.
When the hose is no longer required the hose is wound up and the hose reel 2 is returned to a position wherein the axis of rotation of the rotatable reel member is substantially at right
2338&g angles to the translational direction of movement of said slideable frame 1, so that the rotatable member 2 is able to again enter the cavity 5.
Thus it can be seen that in at least the preferred form of the invention a hose reel mechanism is provided which is substantially compact transversely so that it can be positioned in a narrow cavity such as that at the facings of a wall. Only a small door need be provided to cover the cavity and this is visually appealing.
The construction is of a type so that the reel can be moved out translationally from the wall yet is able to swing out once removed from the cavity so that the hose can be readily drawn out from the reel.
