Journal, No: . ...13£?; Patents Form No. 5 NEW ZEALAND PATENTS ACT 1953 COMPLETE SPECIFICATION LABEL FOR CONTAINERS, ESPECIALLY FOR BOTTLES MADE OF GLASS OR PLASTIC X/We, HAGEN & SORENSEN A/S, of Overgade 14, .
DK-5000 Odense C, DENMARK/ A Danish company, hereby declare the invention, for which Af/we pray that a patent may be granted to j^/us, and the method by which it is to be performed, to be particularly described in and by the following statement: (followed by Page la) ^ \v_i. uj •' 229368 -la- LABEL FOR CONTAINERS. ESPECIALLY FOR BOTTLES MADE OF GLASS OR PLASTIC The invention relates to a label for containers, especially for bottles made of glass or plastic according to the following disclosure: a label for containers, being attachable to a surface of the container in the form of a printable leaf of a sheet material, preferably paper or plastic, by an adhesive layer.
A great number of containers made of glass, plastic or sheet-metal are provided with labels instead of being directly imprinted. Usual labels comprise a film material, preferably paper, having the form of a sheet and being fixed on the surface of a container. Labels consisting of a plastic film may be made adhesive by partly solving the plastic material. 22 9 3 68 The usual way, however, is to fix labels by means of an adhesive. One requirement for the adhesive is that it does not affect the appearance of the label; a further requirement is that it is somewhat temperature-stable in order to prevent an undesired even partly detaching. A generally used method for applying labels to bottles or the like is to use cold glue.
In general, labels fixed with cold glue to bottles are not easily detachable which sometimes is desired if labels are to be used in advertising. The attraction and consequently the advertising effect of a product is increased if the user may be invited to detach a label in order to take knowledge of information written on its back side. The back side of a label may be imprinted with a picture, a voucher or the like which stimulates the user to collect pictures or vouchers. However, as already mentioned, a detaching of labels fixed with cold glue to a bottle is not possible. For this, an adhesive is required which produces a reduced adhesion of the label. In case an adhesive is used which produces a reduced adhesion force, the label may be partly or entirely detached or disarranged before the product has reached the final customer. ./3 The detaching or loosening of a label section may be further effected by not sticking this section to the surface of a container. Then, the user may detach the section which for example carries an advertising information on its back side. This method, however, bears the risk that the label section is torn off or apart, respectively, affecting its appearance during the handling and the transport of the containers.
The object of the invention is to produce a label for containers, especially for bottles made of glass or plastic, allowing the detaching of a label section and having no portions projecting in a disturbing manner and being thereby not fragile before its detaching.
This object is attained by the features of the characterizing portion of claim 1.
The label according to the invention comprises a section being defined by a weakening line. This section may be separated by a continuous, for example rectilinear weakening line from the remaining label. Furthermore, the weakening line, however, may also be a line closed in itself, which for example describes a rectangle defining a kind of window . / 4 22 9 3 6 in the label. The label according to the invention is applied to a bearing surface a conventional manner by means of cold glue, with its back side, however, being provided with a substance reducing or preventing the sticking effect of the adhesive in the area of the above mentioned section. Preferably, the substance is applied to the entire surface as a strong adhesion even in single points would affect an easy detaching of the section without deterioration. The application of the substance or a corresponding coating, respectively, has the effect that cold glue or an adhesive, respectively, do not develop their action in this area, so to speak is partially "neutralizing" it.
There exist different substances which may be used in reducing the adhesion effect. For instance, a weak coating of neutralizing varnish may be provided which only allows a low adhesion of the adhesive to the label in this area. Alternatively, also a preferably transparent plastic coating may be provided which only produces a weak anchoring of the adhesive at the back side of the label in the mentioned area such that the section may be detached simply by pulling it off manually. For instance, acetate may be used as material neutralizing the adhesive. ./5 IP o 22 9368 Furthermore, the "neutralizing" substance should be composed in a way that the label section feels dry and does not stick any more after having been detached.
The application of a substance producing a reduced adhesion may be performed without problems. Since a label according to the invention generally bears an imprint on its back side in the area of the detachable section, the substance coating may be done together with the imprinting.
The invention is explained in more detail referring to some embodiments.
Fig. 1 shows a perspective view of a label for a bottle according to the invention.
Fig. 2 shows a further embodiment of a label for a bottle according to the invention.
Fig. 3 shows a perspective view of a label according to Fig. 2 fixed to a bottle with a portion being partially detached. . . ./6 220368 Before going into detail shown in the drawings, it should be noted that each of the described features per se or in connection with features of the claims is significant to the invention.
Fig. 1 shows a label 10 comprising a trapezoidal leaf 11 made of sheet material, e.g. of paper. It bears a usual advertising imprint (not shown). The leaf 11 is provided with a rectangularly extending scoring line forming a corresponding section. This section 14 may manually be removed from the leaf 11 as indicated in Fig. 1. The section 14 bears on its back side (15) an imprint, e.g. in form of a voucher, a picture or the like.
The label 20 shown in Fig. 2 has the same form and consists of the same material as label 10 in Fig. 1. It comprises one sheet leaf 21 being separated into two adjacent sections by a scoring line 22 extending between upper and lower edge.
Fig. 3 shows a label fixed to the neck of a bottle 23 with its right section 24 being partially detached. The detachable section 24 also bears an advertising imprint on its back side, e.g. in form of a voucher, a picture or the 229368 The labels shown in Fig. 1 to 3 are fixed to the bottle 23 using conventional cold glue. Sections 14 or 24, respectively, however, have been previously coated with a substance partially neutralizing the adhesive effect of the cold glue. The substance used is transparent in order to leave the imprint unaffected. It further reduces the adhesion forces of the adhesive, e.g. by producing a reduced absorption which leads to a reduced anchoring of the adhesive in this section. Substances reducing the adhesive effect are for example neutralizing varnish, acetate or the like. Therefore, the user may partially lift off section 14 with a pointed object and subsequently pull it off by hand. In the same manner, section 24 may be loosened and be detached along scoring line 22 from the other section of leaf 21. . / 8 229368 WHAT X/WE CLAIM rS:--
