PATENT OFFICE

2 1 JUL 1v36

NEW ZEALAND

PAirailS ACT 1953

OQMHETE SPBCEFICftinCM

AFTER PRCWISICHAL MO: 213206

DKTHD:

22 August 1965

Men-tip Swivel Hose Reel Stand u

I, Charles Herbert Thanas , a New Zealand Citizen of 77 Parakai Avenue, Parakai, Helensville, Auckland, New Zealand, do hereby declare the invention for which I pray that a patent may be granted to me and the method by which it is to be performed, to be particularly described in and by the following statement:

- 1 -

1422cs. 786/mf

- 2 -

813306

This invention relates to the general field of stands and supports, with particular relevance to reels for hoses, cables and similar apparatus.

It is an object of the present invention to go at least partway towards providing an improved free-standing reel stand far hoses and/or cables, or at least to provide the public with a useful choice.

In one aspect the invention provides a reel stand having a rotatable reel mounting with which in use a hose reel or the like is associated, said mounting being in use rotatably supported by a substantially vertical mentoer.

Preferably the substantially vertical member is associated with a base.

Preferably the base is formed substantially from concrete or a similarly heavy material.

Preferably the platform or mounting is also formed substantially from concrete or similar.

Preferably the platform or mounting is provided with attachment bolts by which a reel bracket may be fixed to it.

The following is a description of one preferred form of the invention, given by way of example, with reference to the accompanying drawings, in which:

Figure 1: shows the preferred apparatus in side view and in section, with a reel and bracket attached as in use.

Hitherto hose and other reels have commonly been used either free-standing on a bracket, or secured to a wall-mounting. In both cases it is often found difficult to draw out the hose or cable in directions which are other than orthogonal to the axle of the reel - the reel may jam, or the hose become caught in the reel bracket support, or in the case of free standing reels, the reel may tip or drag, thereby stretching and twisting the connection between the reel and the tap or outlet.

The invention comprises in its preferred form a stand for use with a hose reel 10 and mounting brackets 11, having an upper platform 12 and a base 13, the platform being swivel-mounted on the base, and the hose reel fixed by the bracket 11 to the platform.

- 3 -

213206

Preferably the upper platform 12 is formed from concrete, and preferably also slightly curved on the upper surface to facilitate proper water runoff. Bolts 14 car other connectors may be set into the platform as part of the reel bracket connection. Commonly hose reel brackets are provided with holes, through which the bolts 14 may pass and by which a stable connection may be made. If however such holes are not provided, or the bracket is otherwise unsuited to such a connection, a bar or strap 15, with suitable holes, may be passed across parts of the bracket 11 and used to clamp it to the platform 12 with nuts 16.

The platform 12 has on its underside, preferably centrally located, a pin 17. This may consist of a short section of pipe, fixed to a plate 18, in turn fixed to the platform 12 - possibly by bolts 19 set into the concrete in a manner similar to the bolts 14 described above.

The pin 17 fits in use into a socket 20 en the upper surface of the base 13, preferably in such a way that a 10mm clearance gap is left in use between the platform 12 and the base 13 to ensure free swivel movement. The base 13 is preferably farmed as a concrete slab, and the socket 20 may be provided as a simple pipe, of larger internal diameter than the external diameter of the pin, set into the concrete of the base. Lugs 21 may be provided by cutting and bending section of the pipe so as to firmly set the socket 20 in place.

The socket 20 should be sealed off during manufacture of the base to prevent infiltration of the cement.

The base 13 may be made as a portable element, or alternatively as an emplaced fixture, set in the ground. Preferably it is approximately 60cm x 60cm in area, and 7.5cm in thickness, but this may be varied, depending on the type of reel with which it is intended to be used, and on whether it is to be portable or emplaced. The platform 12 is preferably 40cm x 40cm in area, and approximately 4cm thick, but again this may vary.

The materials from which the different parts of the apparatus are made may be varied - for example, the platform and/or base could be made from fibreglass metal or plastic, but the area of the base might need to be enlarged such that the lighter weight does not make the stand unstable. If cement is used it may be advantageous to include mesh reinforcing.

- 4 -

213206

A more complex swivel point system could be used, possibly including a roller bearing track to minimise friction, but this is not generally seen as necessary, and for reasons of economy the simpler system is seen as preferable.

While the embodiment of the invention described above is intended for use with a standard hose reel and bracket as is presently available, it will be appreciated that apparatus including a bracket and reel as an integral part is within the scope of the invention.

o Other changes and alterations to the above example are possible within the general spirit and scope of the invention, as exemplified by the following claims:

£
