WATER-MISCIBLE DISINFECTANT CLEANER COMPOSITION

fyj We, STERLING DRUG INC., a corporation of the State of Delaware, United States of America, of 90 Park Avenue, New York,- State of New York, United States of America hereby declare the invention for which ^ / we pray that a patent may be granted to n*e/us, and the method by which it is to be performed, to be particularly described in and by the following statement: -

1°

This invention relates to disinfectant cleaner compositions/ and more particularly to water-miscible liquid disinfectant cleaner concentrates based on ortho-phenylphenol and pine oil.

5 Pine oil, because of its high bactericidal activity,

wetting and penetrating properties, and pleasant fragrance, has been employed for many years as a constituent of liquid disinfectant cleaner compositions useful for cleaning, disinfecting and deodorizing a wide variety of surfaces and as 10 an aid in laundering operations, both in the household and in commercial establishments; see Pine Oil Formulary, Section B, Pine and Paper Chemicals Department, Hercules Incorporated, pages 13-46.

Pine oil-based disinfectant deodorizer cleaner 15 compositions basically consist of pine oil, a soap, a surfactant, a buffering agent and isopropyl alcohol in an aqueous system. The amount of pine oil employed in such compositions will depend, among other things, on the disinfectant activity desired and on its content of terpene alcohols, to which 20 its bactericidal properties are attributable, and may range from about 1 to 8 0% by weight of the composition. Thus, for example, such a composition will require sufficient pine oil to provide at least 15% by weight of the composition of terpane alcohols in order to meet the requirement for 25 a disinfectant against Salmonella choleraesuis when tested according to the A.O.A.C. Use-Dilution Method - Official Final Action (1980).

In certain cases, in order to achieve specifically desired disinfectant properties, particularly in those cases 30 when it is desired to reduce the amount of pine oil in a nrTKFT

composition, it is necessary to fortify the pine oil composition with an additional disinfecting agent such as a phenolic or quaternary ammonium halide compound. To date the preponderance of commercially available fortified liquid disinfectant concentrates employ o-benzyl-p-chlorophenol as the additional disinfecting agent.

Three currently available commercial pine oil products of the fortified type are identified on their labels as having the following compositions:

from 0.25 to 4 parts of pine oil or alpha *-terpineol per part by weight of o-phenylphenol, and which contain sodium hydroxide, potassium cocoanut-oil soap or potassium linseed oil soap, isopropyl alcohol and water,

5 British Patent Specification 1,583,765 discloses liquid disinfectant compositions comprising a phenolic compound such as o-phenylphenol or o-benzyl-p-chlorophenol,

pine oil, a water-soluble C2.2-20 sulfonate or alkyl sulfonate, water and optionally a lower alkanol, e.g. 10 isopropyl alcohol, wherein the amount of pine oil incorporated is between about 1 and 4 parts per part by weight of the phenolic compound.

It has been found that pine oil-based deodorizer cleaner compositions containing an amount of pine oil which 15 provides substantially less than 15 weight-percent of terpene alcohols are effective as disinfectants against Salmonella choleraesuis when tested in accordance with the A.O.A.C. Use-Dilution Method-Official Final Action (Applicable to testing disinfectants miscible with water to determine 20 maximum dilutions effective for practical disinfection)

(Official Methods of Analysis of the Association of Official Analytical Chemists, 13th Ed., 1980, pages 58-59) if the compositions have incorporated therein o-phenylphenol.

Thus the invention provides a liquid water-miscible 25 disinfectant cleaner composition which comprises as essential components: (A) a pine oil containing at least 50 weight-percent of terpene alcohols, (B) o-phenylphenol, (C) a soap, (D) an aliphatic monohydric C^alcohol, and (E) water;

wherein, based on the total weight of components (A) , (B) , 3 0 (C), (D) and (E), said composition contains an amount of component (A) sufficient to provide from about 3 to 12 percent by weight of terpene alcohols, from about 0.5 to 2.5 percent by weight of component (B), from about 4 to 15 percent by weight of component (C), from about 5 to 15 35 percent by weight of component (D), and the balance to 100 percent, water? the combined terpene alcohols being present in at least 4.5 parts per part by weight of component (B).

Pine oils are commercially available terpene-rich oils the major constituent of which is alpha-terpineol and which also contain other terpene alcohols as well as terpene hydrocarbons. The terpene alcohols constitute the bactericid-5 ally active components of the pine oils and the total terpene alcohol content of the pine oils can vary over a wide range, typically from about 50 to 90 weight-percent. The pine oils used in the compositions of the invention should have a total terpene alcohol content of at least about 50 weight-10 percent. A preferred pine oil is Glidco® Pine Oil 60 because a major portion of the terpene hydrocarbon content thereof is dipentene which contributes to solvent power

60, obtainable from SCM Corporation, has a terpene alcohol 15 content of approximately 60%. The amount of pine oil employed should be sufficient to provide from about 3 to 12 percent by weight of terpene alcohols based on the total weight of the essential components of the composition.

The amount of o-phenylphenol employed in the 20 compositions of the invention should be from about 0.5 to 2.5 percent by weight based on the total weight of the essential components of the composition.

The relative amounts of pine oil and o-phenylphenol employed in the compositions of the invention should be such 25 that the total weight of terpene alcohols constitute at least 4.5 times the weight of o-phenylphenol.

The soaps employed in the compositions of the invention are selected from the sodium and potassium salts of fatty acids, preferably C-^-lS fatt^ acids, derived from 30 rosin, tall oil and vegetable and animal oils and fats. The amount of soap used should be from about 5 to 15 percent by weight based on the total weight of the essential components of the composition.

The alcohols used in the compositions of the ^5 invention are selected from C^ 4 aliphatic monohydric alcohols, i.e., ethyl alcohol, propyl alcohol, isopropyl alcohol, n-butyl alcohol, secondary-butyl alcohol and tertiary-butyl and pleasingly modifies the fragrance.

2

alcohol. The alcohol aids in solubilizing the pine oil, o-phenylphenol and soap and is required to ensure low temperature stability of the o-phenylphenol. The amount of alcohol employed should be from about 5 to 15 percent by weight based 5 on the total weight of the essential components of the composition.

as aqueous concentrates, the amount of water used being sufficient to provide the balance to 100 percent by weight 10 based on the total weight of the essential ingredients of the composition.

compositions of the invention may have incorporated therein optional ingredients such as anionic surfactants, agents to 15 control pH, antioxidants and colorants.

as well as to improve wetting and provided added detergency. Anionic surfactants which can be employed are, for example, C12-20 a^Yl and olefin sulfates and sulfonates and alkyl 20 aryl sulfonates. If employed, the anionic surfactants preferably are incorporated in amounts such that the combined weight of the soap and surfactant does not exceed about 16 percent based on the total weight of the essential components of the composition.

25 The compositions of the invention have a pH

above 7. Preferably the pH should be 8.5 or higher since below pH 8.5 there is a tendency for at least a part of the soap to precipitate. A preferred pH range is 8.5 to 10. The pH may be regulated by the addition of an appro->0 priate amount of a suitable alkaline reacting agent or buffer such as are well known e»g., sodium carbonate, sodium bicarbonate, sodium metasilicate, tetrasodium ethylenediaminetetraacetate, di- and trisodium salts of nitrolotriacetic acid monohydrate, trisodium phosphate, ;5 alkali metal hydroxide, etc.

to clean, disinfect and deodorize a variety of hard surfaces

The compositions of the invention are formulated

In addition to the essential components, the

Anionic surfactants can be added as foam boosters

The compositions of the invention can be used

in the household such as floors, walls, woodwork, sinks,

tubs, toilets, tiles, etc. The compositions may also be used as an aid in laundering operations. Although in certain circumstances it may be desirable to use the compositions of the invention full strength, e.g., to remove stains in clothing prior to laundering, the compositions generally are diluted for use with water. On diluting the compositions with water a blooming effect is obtained, i.e., the diluted composition becomes milky in appearance. A practical use dilution should contain at least 100 parts per million of o-phenylphenol.

The following example will illustrate the invention, without, however, limiting it thereto.
