Fremgangsmåte og system for overvåking av et område, særlig for gass og/eller røykdeteksjon, omfattende følgende trinn: elektronisk registrering av et valgt område med et fastmontert kamera med en todimensjonal sensormatrise, for dannelse av et referansebilde av området, definisjon av et eller flere referanseområder innenfor referanse- bildet, gjentatt registrering av det valgte området, for dannelse av minst ett påfølgende bilde av området, sammenligning av det påfølgende bildet med referansebilde, og registrering av forskyvninger og/eller diffusering av de nevnte referansepunktene, på bakgrunn av registrerte endringer, utsendelse av et elektroniske eller optisk signal.
