Abstract

Mixing the acidic and alkaline wastewater becomes more difficult to separate the various substances from the process stream into a subsequent treatment, resulting in larger amounts of wastewater, which is disadvantageous by methods where the aim is to close the bleaching plant. In addition, problems occur due to the formation of encrustations on heat transfer surfaces. The present invention relates to an improved method of treating the process wastewater from a bleaching plant, wherein the acidic and alkaline process stream is separately concentrated in evaporators, thereby reducing the salt content of the acidic process stream by electrodialysis and combining the alkaline process stream. This process makes it possible to reduce the amount of recycled water and avoid the problems associated with the process equipment, and the process also contributes to a higher degree of closure even when the bleaching comprises chlorine dioxide (ECF).
