Abstract
A method for recovering astaxanthin carotenoid pigment from Haematococcus pluvialis algae is described. The method comprises two steps: (a) comminuting said algae in a liquid medium by blasting the algae cell walls and dispersing the resulting pigment, characterized in that said comminution is carried out in a high pressure apparatus consisting of two consecutive units; a pressure vessel and an interaction chamber, whereby a slurry of said algae containing more than 1% by weight and generally between 5-10% by weight solids is introduced into said pressure vessel maintained at a pressure of at least 13789 Kpa (2000 psi) and preferably in the range of 20684 Kpa (3000 psi) to 41369 Kpa (6000 psi) and is transported into said interaction chamber where a pressure is maintained above 68948 Kpa (10000 psi) and preferably in the range of 89632 Kpa (13000 psi) to 124106 Kpa (18000 psi). ), wherein said interaction chamber contains at least one channel through which the slurry is conducted at an increased rate to produce a turbulent beam causing a burst of. the algae cell walls and a significant reduction in the particle size of the alga, which impacts the disintegrated particles into a low pressure zone, thereby releasing the astaxanthin carotenoid pigment from the finely divided algae and subsequently recovering.
