Abstract

The method comprises steps in which compressed air is injected into said containers for the purpose of displacing at least a portion of their contents, a sample of the thus displaced container content is extracted by applying a suction force to it and the suction sample is analyzed to determine the presence or absence of certain residues therein. The compressed air is sprayed through a nozzle (16) into an opening in the containers (C) to displace a portion of the container contents and form a sample cloud (18) outside the container. The sample cloud is then at least partially extracted by means of a suction force and the sample is analyzed for the presence of contaminants, such as nitrogenous compounds or hydrocarbons. In one embodiment, approx. 90% of the extracted sample from the analyzer (26) and recirculated into the air injector (14). In another embodiment, a fan (15) is provided for blowing remnants of the sample cloud downstream of the sample station (12). A cap (106) may be provided in a display assembly (100) at the test station to create proper aerodynamic conditions in the area for removing such residues.
