Abstract

A particulate procatalyst composition intended for polymerization of olefins is prepared by reacting carrier particles consisting of MgCl2-C2H5OH complex with T1C14. When the process is used on a pilot scale, it was noted that the procatalyst composition obtained produced olefin polymer, the finely divided material portion thereof being damagingly high. This was caused by the fact that the procatalyst composition particles had decomposed into finely divided material during the synthesis, and this was repeated in the polymerization in the polymer structure due to the so-called replica phenomenon. In the present invention, it has been unexpectedly recorded that breakage of carrier particles is not a result of e.g. mechanical load, but by the fact that when the carrier particles react with T1C14, a heavy depletion of hydrogen chloride first occurs as a result of the reaction which breaks the carrier particles. The carrier particles of the invention can be retained undamaged during the reaction by distributing the release of the reaction or from the reaction of hydrogen chloride created in the reaction to a molar rate not exceeding a five times the molar average release rate. This is achieved, among other things. by adding reagents unusually slowly, by using lower temperatures and heating rates, by intensifying shaking, by using an overpressure and / or by conducting dilute inert gas in the reaction mixture.
