Abstract
Lokalisering og kartlegging av forekomst av olje- utsiving i havbunnen frembringes ved et apparat for å detektere den resulterende unormale fordeling av elektrisk potensiale innenfor de påvirkede sedimenter. En elektrisk isolert sonde (20) nedsenkes ved hjelp av en stålkabel (18) fra et fartøy (10) for implantering av elektroder (40, 42, 44, 46, 48) i sedimentet (14) med dybder på mellom 60 cm og 5 m. Isolerte ledere inne i sonden (20) forbinder elektrodene (40-48) med en referanse-elektrode (52) ved hjelp av et elektrometer som frembringer måling av forskjell i elektrisk potensiale mellom en av sonde- elektrodene (40-48) og referanse-elektroden (52) . Digitale målinger overføres til et tilhørende akustisk modem (34) og deretter til fartøyet (10) gjennom vannet (12). Systemet muliggjør at det kan hurtig frembringes kart- legging av sedimentets elektriske tilstand over store områder av havbunnen ved gjentatt nedsenkning, aktivering, opptrekking og omplassering av proben (20). Tilsvarende kan en kartlegge forekomst av dumpet organisk avfall, kloakkslam, eller annet organisk materiale deriblant også innbefattende lekkasjer av olje fra en brønn eller en rørledning.
