Device for detecting faults on an electrical energy distribution underground network (1) including an electronic circuit (6) which receives a signal representing the homopolar voltage and a signal representing the homopolar current of the line to be monitored, the said electronic circuit carrying out detection of the transient variations in the homopolar current by comparing the sign of the homopolar current with that of the homopolar voltage, characterised in that the homopolar current sensor consists of one or more tori (2) and in that the voltage sensor consists of a capacitor (9) connected between the common terminal (8) of the capacitors (7) of a capacitive divider and earth. <IMAGE>
