Description
The present invention relates to new electrodes activated by means of heteropolyacids and the production and use of such electrodes, especially as cathodes in electrolysis cells.
Much research has been carried out to try to find products that can replace fossil fuel and there is general agreement that future hydrogen will be an important replacement product.
Industrial methods for producing hydrogen consist of either reducing water with carbon or hydrocarbons by supplying energy or decomposing water by electrolysis.
Chemical techniques for reducing water have the disadvantage of using fossil fuel as starting material and yield less pure hydrogen than that obtained by electrolysis of water. In addition, these chemical water reduction techniques involve the formation of carbonaceous gases whose byproducts scientists are currently trying to limit.
Electrolysis of water is a potentially important technique. However, in order to electrolyse water at a suitable rate, a relatively high overvoltage must be applied, which involves the consumption of additional electrical energy.
It is of course theoretically possible to reduce these overvoltages to a minimum by using platinum-coated cathodes, but platinum is too expensive to allow electrolytic hydrogen to be obtained at competitive production rates even if there is a way to reduce the cost of platinum per surface unit of the electrodes.
An object of the present invention is to provide a new method for activating electrodes which allows the use as cathodes of materials such as glassy carbon or graphite well known for their strong hydrogen-releasing overvoltage whose efficiency is equal to or greater than that of platinum.
The present invention thus allows the use of electrodes made of cheap material and which also have the advantage of not being sensitive to impurities which are known to have the effect of killing the catalytic compounds in the hydrogen-releasing reaction.
The object of the present invention is electrodes consisting of conductive material whose surface is activated by treatment with at least one heteropolyacid.
Two attempts to modify the surface of the electrodes with a carbon base using heteropolyacids have been reported in the recent literature. However, these modifications differed from the present invention both from the state of the art upon activation as well as the nature of the results sought and obtained.
The first case (Japanese Patent Application No. 82/168606 Publication No. 84.60818; Chemical Abstracts Vol. 101, October 15, 1984, page 738 abstract No. 142440w) relates to deposition by precipitation on carbon of a compound ionic material containing a heteropolyacid, a organic compound and an organometallic compound. The electrode material obtained can be used for the reduction of oxygen and for selective synthesis by electrolysis.
In the second case (Meduro et al, "Modified electrodes with ion associate complexes of heteropoly acids", Denki Kagagu Oyobi Kogyo Butsuri Kagaku, 1983, 51 (1), 87-88; Chemical Abstracts Vol. 99, August 22, 1983, page 441 abstract no. 60780 h) glassy carbon is coated with a heteropolysalt. The motions chosen are ammonium ions (NH^+, polyvinylbenzyl trimethyl ammonium etc.) The surface waves corresponding to redox systems have been observed in cyclic voltammetry.
All these results differ from those according to the present invention in particular due to:
-avleiringsteknikken i de to tilfeller- the deposition technique in the two cases
-de anvendte konsentrasjoner-the concentrations used
-egenskapene til avleiringen i første tilfelle- the properties of the deposit in the first case
-typen av de ønskede resultater (i første tilfelle)- the type of the desired results (in the first case)
og de observerte (i andre tilfelle) siden de karakterist-iske redox-systemer av heteropolyanionet med elektroden ifølge foreliggende oppfinnelse ikke observeres etter elek-trodebehandling. and the observed (in the second case) since the characteristic redox systems of the heteropolyanion with the electrode according to the present invention are not observed after electrode treatment.
The heteropolyacids are acids derived from two or more acids so that the anions from each acid maintain their structural identity in the complex radical or in the molecule formed. The term heteropolyacid is used more specifically for complex acids in which all the anions are formed from oxides.
It is known that heteropolyacids, especially those derived from tungsten and molybdenum, form a series of chemical species which have been subjected to many studies and for which the relationship between properties has been brought out in different areas.
Heteropolysyrene eller de korresponderende heteropolyanioner, deres fremstilling og enkelte av deres egenskaper har blitt spesielt beskrevet i følgende verker: Nouveay Traite de Chimie Minerale (New treatise on Mineral Chemistry), under henvisning av Paul Pascal, Vol. XIV, spesielt sidene 17-19 og 903-981; P. Souchay, "Polyanions and Polycations"; Gauthier-Villars Editeur, Paris, 1963; og P. Souchay, "Ions mineraus condenses", Masson et Cie Edi-teurs, Paris, 1969. The heteropolyacids or the corresponding heteropolyanions, their preparation and some of their properties have been particularly described in the following works: Nouveay Traite de Chimie Minerale (New treatise on Mineral Chemistry), citing Paul Pascal, Vol. XIV, especially pages 17-19 and 903-981; P. Souchay, "Polyanions and Polycations"; Gauthier-Villars Editeur, Paris, 1963; and P. Souchay, "Ions mineraus condenses", Masson et Cie Edi-teurs, Paris, 1969.
Resultatet er en fullstendig serie av komplekser kalt heteropolysyrer og som er spesielt tallrike i tilfelle It is known that heteropolyacids originate from the association of certain metallic anhydrides with oxygenated acids, where this association is completed by possible fixation of water. The result is a complete series of complexes called heteropolyacids and which are particularly numerous in the case
med wolfram og molybdenanhydrider.with tungsten and molybdenum anhydrides.
Among the acids it is possible to associate with the anhydrides indicated above, silicic acids, phosphoric acids, orthoboric acids, germanic acids, arsenic acids, antimonic acids, etc. can be mentioned in particular.
Disse heteropolysyrer er vanligviskarakterisert vedforholdet M/X: These heteropolyacids are usually characterized by the ratio M/X:
hvor M = Mo eller W eller spesielt V,where M = Mo or W or especially V,
og X = B, Si, Ge, P, As, Sb, etc.and X = B, Si, Ge, P, As, Sb, etc.
The heteropolyacids which are generally produced by the action of the anhydrides of the indicated metals on solutions of selected oxygenated acids in an acidic environment, often change from one to the other especially as a function of pH. In addition, several hydrates can often be isolated.
The heteropolyacids are usually represented by a simplified formula showing on the one hand the number of hydrogen acids and on the other hand the anions since, as indicated above, the anions maintain their identity in the heteropolyacids.
These acids or the corresponding anions can also be represented further simplified with an abbreviated formula showing the hydrogen acids and the atoms that make up the anions as will be shown later in the examples.
The most common heteropolyacids are those where the ratio M/X is equal to 12. These polyacids are usually called "series 12 heteropolyacids". These products are easy to manufacture and several of them are commercial products.
Series 11 "heteropolyanions (where the ratio M/X is equal to 11") turns into series 12 acids in a sufficiently acidic environment so that using series 11 products as starting materials actually involves using series 12 products in strongly acidic environments. Other series of heteropolyacids can be used for activation treatment of the electrodes according to the present invention.
Blandt heteropolysyrene kan følgende syrer anføres spesielt: Among the heteropolyacids, the following acids can be mentioned in particular:
-silikon-12-wolfram med forkortet formel-silicon-12-tungsten with abbreviated formula
H4(SiW12°40^ H4(SiW12°40^

Among the heteropolyacids that can be used according to the present invention, the derivatives of heteropolyacids can also be specified in which vanadium partially replaces molybdenum or tungsten, for example the germanovanadommolybdenum derivatives of the formula (GeMo^qV2°39^' or analogous germanovanadotungsten, phosphovanadomolybdenum, phosphorvanadotungsten, siliconovanadomolybdenum, silicovanadotungsten etc. These derivatives must be considered series 12 derivatives because their formula is of type XM V where X=Y=12.
Of course, the term "heteropolyacids" denotes both the acids themselves and the aqueous solutions of their soluble salts in an acidic environment (for example a sodium or lithium salt).
The invention extends to the use of products of reduction of heteropolyacids such as for example the compounds called "ceruleum-molybdenum" and "ceruleum-tungsten" derivatives.
Thus, a goal of the present invention is a new electrode whose surface is activated by treatment with at least one heteropolyacid and characterized by: - that the elements consisting of heteropolyacid are present on the surface of the treated electrode; -that in the case where the electrode is a solid substance with a measurable surface, a yield current density, i^, can be obtained expressed in amperes/cm<2> for the hydrogen release reaction by electrolysis of water in an acidic environment such that (-log i^) is less than 3 and especially less than 2.8; - that in the case where the electrode is made of mercury, the current density is such that (-log i^) is less than or equal to 4.1; - and that in the case where the electrode is a solid whose surface is not measurable, the yield in potential measured for the hydrogen release reaction by electrolysis of water in an acidic environment for an observed current equal to 1 milliampere, is at least equal to 1 volt.
These results are obtained in particular due to the treatment of the electrode with dilute solutions of heteropolyacids.
Another characteristic of the electrodes according to the invention is that the presence on the surface of the treated electrode of partial elements of the heteropolyacid can be shown by suitable analysis techniques such as for example electron spectroscopy technique for chemical analysis, also called E.S.CA. method (Electron Spectroscopy for Chemical Analysis); see for example KANE and LARRABEE, Characterization of Solid Surfaces, Plenum Press (1974).
The present invention is particularly aimed at electrodes whose surface is activated by means of reduced forms of heteropolyacids.
The electrode materials that can be activated by means of heteropolyacids are any electrically conductive material (electronic conductor) that can be used as an electrode, especially metals and also known materials with a conductive carbon base such
The invention also aims at the use of a dilute solution of at least one heteropolyacid or of a reduced form of a heteropolyacid in the activation treatment of an electrode and in particular the use of at least one heteropolyacid mentioned above.
The activation treatment method for electrodes using heteropolyacids is characterized by the fact that the electrodes in an acidic environment are brought into contact with a dilute aqueous solution of at least one heteropolyacid.
Fortrinnsvis holdes pH under 3. The pH is preferably kept below 3. In particular, the operating environment is kept at a pH of 0 to 3 and preferably of 0 to 1.
The treatment is carried out in particular in an aqueous solution of a strong acid such as sulfuric acid, hydrochloric acid, perchloric acid etc.
Of course, the treatment is carried out with a heteropolyacid which is stable at the pH of the treatment.
Elektrodebehandlingsoppløsningen er en fortynnet hetero- polysyreoppløsning det vil si den inneholder en lav konsentrasjon av heteropolysyren spesielt i en konsentrasjon The electrode treatment solution is a diluted heteropolyacid solution, i.e. it contains a low concentration of the heteropolyacid especially in a concentration
-3 -4 -3 -4
mindre enn 10 mol/l, og spesielt mindre enn 10less than 10 mol/l, and especially less than 10
mol/l.moth.
Generelt ligger konsentrasjonen av heteropolysyre mellomIn general, the concentration of heteropolyacid is between
— 8 — 3 — 8 — 3
ca. 10 M og ca. 10 M.about. 10 M and approx. 10 m.
In order to obtain the electrode activation effect, a cathode voltage sufficient to obtain at the electrode a reduced form of the heteropolyacid is applied to the electrode in contact with the treatment solution. For this purpose, the cathode potential is applied to the electrode and the original hetero polyacid is reduced by electrolysis.
Of course, this treatment with a cathode potential can take place later during the first use of the electrode treated with the heteropolyacid in an electrolytic bath (aqueous acid solution).
In general, the electrode to be treated is exposed to a potential in a range from -0.4 to -1.3 volts with respect to a saturated calomel electrode, i.e. a mercuric chloride cell.
It has been observed that the current increases with time and finally stabilizes at a high level (this stabilization corresponds to the maximum degree of release of hydrogen at the potential of the electrode). The electrode can then be considered treated. The treatment time is shorter as the treatment voltage is made more negative. The treatment time is usually from 3 to approx. 60 min.
On an untreated electrode, studying the electrochemical behavior of the heteropolyanions by cyclic voltammetry shows, before the proton reduction wave, several reversible reduction waves with a sweep rate of 100mV/s. According to the progress of treatment of the electrodes, the proton reduction potential moves further and further in the positive direction, which progressively inhibits the possibility of observing heteropolyanion reduction waves. This characterizes the catalytic effect of the small amounts of the reduced heteropolyacid present on the surface of the treated electrode.
Elektroder således behandlet beholder sine egenskaper uten spesielle beskyttelsesforanstaltninger. Electrodes thus treated retain their properties without special protective measures. Thus, an electrode treated and stored in air or water for more than 3 months and then again immersed in heteropolyacid solution without an induction period has the activity observed towards the end of the original treatment.
In a similar way, it will be noted that the electrode thus stored and then immersed in a solution without heteropolyacid has the activity observed towards the end of the original treatment during the reaction of hydrogen release by electrolysis.
Of course, the electrode treatment can also be carried out in situ at the beginning of the water electrolysis in an acidic environment simply by adding the heteropolyacid to the electrolysis bath.
The invention also aims at an electrolysis process where an electrode activated by means of a heteropolyacid as defined above is used as electrode.
The invention relates in particular to the use of such an electrode as an electrolysis cathode in a solid or liquid electrolyte and in particular in a water electrolysis operation in an acidic environment.
It is clear to the person skilled in the art that the electrode activation method according to the invention has several advantages.
The treatment uses non-volatile, non-toxic products which therefore pose no risk of contamination.
Elektrodefremstillingsmetoden er spesielt enkel å bruke. The electrode manufacturing method is particularly easy to use.
The heteropolyacids exhibit very high stability in a temperature range from temperatures of the order of -70°C to temperatures greater than +250°C.
The treated electrodes can be stored almost indefinitely in air or water.
A very important point is that these electrodes, in contrast to electrodes based on noble metals, are not sensitive to the usual contaminants that tend to poison the catalysts. It should be noted in this respect that the treatment can consequently be carried out with heteropolyacids of commercial purity level without loss of efficiency of the treated electrodes. This is a very important advantage because it is known that the activity of the electrodes with a noble metal base is quickly reduced by impurities which act as poisoning and reduce catalytic activity.
Another advantage of the electrodes treated according to the present invention is their high operational stability even under high current densities.
Finally, it will be noted that the economic advantages obtained by the method according to inventions are very important in view of the moderate costs of materials such as carbon, whose industrial application as a hydrogen cathode was until now impossible due to the very high hydrogen release overvoltage observed for these materials.
A standard duration of effect test was made with glassy carbon electrodes activated according to the method according to the invention.
Current densities in industrial electrolysers are in the range from 0.1 A/cm<2> to 1 A/cm2 . Duration tests were carried out with a current density of 1 A/cm2. The results are shown in Example 1 below.
Faktisk er konsen-o-5 Comparison with a platinum electrode is most significant. The current densities obtained with platinum cannot be maintained over time without further overvoltage if the electrolyzed solutions are not very pure. In fact, concen-o-5 is

In contrast, no special measures are taken in the case of the present study and even mercury deposited in the form of a stationary electrode on gold can be activated.
As a further proof of the resistance of the catalyst to contaminants, various acids of different origin (HC1 , HC104 , H^O^ ) have been used without previous purification and no problem has occurred.
This insensitivity to contaminating ions with regard to the electrode treated according to the invention is particularly important for use in electrolyzers with a solid polymer electrolyte.
Vitreous carbon electrodes and graphite electrodes treated according to the invention have operated under a current density of 1Acm<2> for more than 1000 hours without signs of failure. The hydrogen volumes per hour and unit of electrode surface correspond, so to speak, in the case of glassy carbon to a current yield of 100%.
Other advantages will become apparent with regard to activity and persistence studies reproduced in the experimental section below.
De følgende ikke-begrensende eksempler illustrerer oppfinnelsen . The following non-limiting examples illustrate the invention.
Eksempel 1Example 1
The electrode undergoing treatment is made of vitreous carbon (from Carbone-Lorraine). This electrode is immersed in an aqueous solution of sulfuric acid with pH=0 containing 4.8 x 10"<5>M of SrW12<O>40<H>4.
This glassy carbon electrode is potentiostatic at -1.2 V, with respect to a saturated calomer electrode.
The platinum counter electrode is in a compartment separated from the compartment containing the working electrode and the reference by a frit with porosity 4.
The electrolyte is the same in the two compartments.
The current density increases progressively and stabilizes towards the end after approx. 3 min.
The voltage intensity curve obtained towards the end of this treatment corresponds to the reaction of hydrogen release. Analysis of this curve allows determination of the yield current density for this reaction. The typical result is log i^ =- 2 (i^i A./cm2 .
Before treatment, in the absence of SiW-^G^Qr^ the same electrode gave a much weaker yield current density (log i^= -7.2) for the hydrogen release reaction. This variation in dividend flow corresponds to an increase in potential of approx. 1 volt. (see Table II below).
Forsøket gikk i mer enn 1500 timer. The same electrode was used for a duration test. In this case the electrolyte is an aqueous solution of 3N sulfuric acid and the current density measured at -0.5 V with respect to a saturated calomel electrode is IA/cm 2 . The hydrogen was shown and the amount measured (416 ml/hour/cm 2 ) corresponding to a 100% current yield. The experiment lasted more than 1,500 hours. No tendency towards poisoning of the activated electrode was detected.
The same duration test in 3N sulfuric acid was carried out with a modified graphite electrode. The current was maintained intensio-statically at 1 amp for more than 1500 hours. No tendency towards an increase in the overvoltage was observed.
E.S.CA. analysis of a glassy carbon electrode before and after treatment shows the presence of the elements Si and W on the treated surface.
Graphite, platinum, gold, tungsten and mercury electrodes have been similarly treated.
The catalytic effect is not observed when the treatment solution has too high a heteropolyacid concentration, for example greater than 10 . In addition, the catalytic effect is no longer present for very low concentrations of the order of 10 ^.
Sammenlignbare resultater har blitt erholdt ved å erstatte SiW^O^jgH^ syren med en av de følgende syrer:<PW>12<o>40<H>3<;><P>2<W>18<0>62<H>6<;>og Comparable results have been obtained by replacing the SiW^O^jgH^ acid with one of the following acids:<PW>12<o>40<H>3<;><P>2<W>18<0>62< H>6<;>and

Karakterisering av elektroder behandlet ifølge oppfinnelsen Characterization of electrodes treated according to the invention
Faktisk er de mest viktige utbyttestrørnmer observert på bart metall i følgende størrelsesorden (ekstremalverdiene av -log ip er gitt i parantes): Pd(3,3 til 2,8) > Pt(3,5 til 2,9) > Re(3) > Rh(3,6 til 3,2) > Ru ( 4 , 2 ) Quantitative characterization of the materials before and after treatment has been carried out by determining the yield current densities, in, compared to the yield current density of platinum. The results are shown in Table I below in the form of (-log1q). The results after treatment compare very favorably with the best hydrogen cathodes in the literature. Indeed, the most important yield stress numbers observed on bare metal are in the following order of magnitude (the extreme values of -log ip are given in parentheses): Pd(3.3 to 2.8) > Pt(3.5 to 2.9) > Re(3 ) > Rh(3.6 to 3.2) > Ru ( 4 , 2 )

From Table I it is clear that in all cases and regardless of the nature of the material used, a significant and surprising improvement is obtained. More particularly, it should be noted the case of treated glassy carbon (CV) which becomes about ten times more efficient than platinum. In addition, this material is cheap. The results concerning graphite are not given in Table I because its actual surface is too little known. Meanwhile, the observations are exactly the same as those obtained with other materials. This last example is very important because of the very low cost of graphite and its large surface area which has already caused it to be adapted in association with platinum catalysts in an acidic environment in some electrolyzers.
Elektrodene var behandlet som beskrevet i eksempel 1 i en oppløsning: (H2SC>4, pH = 0) med 4,8 x 10~<5>M av<SlW>12°40<H>4- From a practical point of view, it is even more striking to describe the improvements in various materials in the course of their actual action. Table II below shows the voltage values measured with respect to the saturated calomel electrode (ECS) for a fixed current density before and after treatment of the materials according to the method described in example 1. In all cases a significant increase in voltage is observed and the results described in example 1 indicates the stability and effect during use. The electrodes were treated as described in example 1 in a solution: (H2SC>4, pH = 0) with 4.8 x 10~<5>M of<SlW>12°40<H>4-
For the graphite electrodes whose actual surface area is large but little known, the improvements resulting from the activation according to the present invention can be demonstrated as follows: In an aqueous solution of 0.5 mol/l of H^SO^, an unmodified (untreated) graphite electrode a maximum current of 58 milliamps at -1.2 volts with respect to the calomer electrode.
At the same potential in the same electrolyte and in the presence of a concentration of 4.8 x 10 ^M of SiW^^n^, the current increases and stabilizes at approx. 550 milliamps.
Between the unmodified graphite electrode and the modified electrode, the increase in potential for an observed current equal to 1 milliamp is always greater than 1 volt.
It is of course understood that changes can be made without deviating from the scope and spirit of the invention.
