Description

Title: Device and system for fixation of recessed downlights.
THECHNICAL FIELD OF THE INVENTION
[0001] Embodiments herein relate to a device and system for fixation of downlights in cutouts or orifices in a user-friendly way and without use of tools. Embodiments herein further relate to a downlight fixture comprising a device for fixation.
BACKGROUND OF THE INVENTION
[0002] A recessed lighting fixture is a lighting fixture that is installed into a hollow opening in a ceiling, wall or similar surface. When installed it appears to have light shining from a hole in the surface, concentrating the light as a broad floodlight or narrow spotlight. There are generally two parts to recessed lights fixture, the light module and holder, sometimes also called the trim and housing. Variants of recessed lighting fixture may also occur, such as pivotable recessed lighting wherein the light module is pivotable in relation to the holder, or wherein the light module is fixed in relation to its surrounding, whereby the recessed lighting fixture comprises a trim and housing.
[0003] Nowadays there are different methods for fixation of downlights, common for these are, that they are not user-friendly, or they are dependent of tools to be fixated in the cutout.
Previously the fixture was attached to a frame mounted with fastening mean, such as screws, to the ceiling or wall, such as disclosed in document WO2014041809A1. Another known method for attaching a downlight fixture is disclosed in US2021215305A1, wherein L brackets 28 are attached to the back portion of a celling and secured to the housing 10 via a clamp 30. These solutions have the downside of requiring access above the ceiling when installing or if the downlight or lamp is to be replaced. They may also leave a mark in the form of a screw holes if the lamp is replaced with another type. Furthermore, if access to above the roof is required, the working position during installation might not be favorable for tool access.
[0004] There have been some solutions for tool-less attachments of light fixtures, like the solution disclosed in document JP2018063961A wherein three spring elements 45 are protruding out from the circular fixture of a light fixture, and when placed in a hollow opening, the spring elements 45 will provide friction or hold to keep the fixture in place. This solution has the downside of providing limited holding force.
[0005] Document AU 2013202102 B1 disclose a solution that comprise one or more mounting arms 17 in rotational co-operation with fixture. The mounting arms 17 may are formed as double helical torsion 7 springs which, when the downlight is mounted in a ceiling, are pushed upwards by the upper surface of the ceiling 25 and are held in tension exerting a force having a downwards component in the direction of the upper surface of the ceiling. Since flange 13 prevents the downlight fixture moving up through the hole, the downlight fixture is held in position. Another similar solution is disclosed in disclosed in documents EP 2877777 A1, wherein a pair of spring loaded arms are arranged to push on the backside of the ceiling portion, pretensioning the fixture, and a thin lining of the trim around the edge, preventing the fixture from being lifted up into the opening.
[0006] Document EP 2463578 A1 discloses a device for fixation of light fixture, the device comprises a preloaded spring 3 adapted to create compression against a cut-out, wherein the preloaded spring 3 is comprised of an elongated spring plate, wherein the spring 3 comprises -a first section 4 the first section comprises means for receiving fasteners 8, wherein the fasteners are adapted to fasten the first section 4 to a light fixture 7 or parts thereof, - at least a second section 5 extending from the first section 4, the second section 5 comprises an first support surface 5b adapted to contact the light fixture 7 or parts thereof, wherein the outer section is preloaded between the fastener(s) of the first section 4 and the first support surface 5b.
[0007] Document EP 2644986 A1 discloses a retrofit light fixture 100 that has a mounting ring 102, a support frame 104 coupled to the mounting ring 102, three spring bands 106 coupled to the mounting ring 102, and a housing 108 for housing one or more light sources, such as one or more light-emitting diodes (LEDs).
[0008] These solution has the downside of being hard to dismount, for instance the solution will pose a threat of “snapping” back at a person’s fingers if pulled out without extensive care. It might also not be able to provide adequate holding force if the celling is too thick or installed in a cylindrical hole.
[0009] Therefore, an improved lighting fixture attachment mean would be desirable, not suffering the above mentioned disadvantages.

Disclosed features of example embodiments may be combined as readily understood by one of ordinary skill in the art to which this application belongs. The following description will use terms such as “horizontal”, “vertical”, “lateral”, “back and forth”, “up and down”, ”upper”, “lower”, “inner”, “outer”, “forward”, “rear”, etc. These terms generally refer to the views and orientations as shown in the drawings and that are associated with a normal use of the invention wherein a user sits in the chair. The terms are used for the reader’s convenience only and shall not be limiting. Like numbers refer to like elements throughout. Numerals with apostrophe represents an additional feature represented by the same numeral, for instance the number 8 will represent one or the first of multiple or all of the multiples, and the numeral 8’ represents an additional of the same feature, like two second sections 8, 8’. Well-known functions or constructions will not necessarily be described in detail for brevity and/or clarity. Further, the use of over, under and similar words, are to be construed as relative to a lighting fixture as mounted in a normal ceiling, but of course these follow reorientation of the lighting fixture as will be understood by the skilled person.
[0028] Fig.1 illustrates a lighting fixture 3, 6 and a fixation device 5 for fixation of lighting fixture 3, 6 in cutouts in a user-friendly way and without tools. Figure 1 illustrates a junction box 1, for connection of main power supply (not shown) which is electrically connected and in communication with a recessed lighting fixture (commonly called a downlight)= comprising a light fixture and trim, comprising the light module 3, such as an LED module adapted to emit light, via a wire 2 between the light module 3 and junction box 1. In the illustrated embodiment the lighting fixture 3, 6 is comprised of a light module 3 and a holder 6. The light module 3 is rotationally attached to holder 6 or housing with a flange 12 protruding around the perimeter of the lower portion of the holder 6. The holder 6 at least partly surrounds the light module 3. Attached to the holder 6, via one or more fastening means 4, 4’ is a preloaded spring 5 adapted to create compression against a cut-out and thus provide adequate holding force between a cut-out or opening and the light fixture. The fastening means 4, 4’ may be comprised of fasteners such as, screws, bolts, rivets or speed rivets or other means such as a holder clamp or grooves or notches in the holder to receive the spring in a secure manner. In the illustrated embodiment the holder 6 comprises flange 12 protruding around the perimeter of the lower portion, two receiving tracks 13, 13 ̈, each receiving track extends a distance upwards from the flange 12, or parts thereof, on opposing sides of the flange 12 and/or light module 3, and a top part 15 extending between a top portion of the receiving tracks 13.
[0029] Figure 2 illustrates an exploded view of the light module, junction box, 1, the frame and the spring 5. The spring 5, which is preloaded when attached to the frame 6, is comprised of an elongated spring plate. The spring 5 comprises a middle section, herein called the first section 7, adapted to be fastened to a top part 15 of the holder 6 or the light module 3. In the illustration of fig.2, the first section 7 comprises means for receiving fasteners 4. Said means can be holes or notches corresponding to the fastening means 4, 4’, thus allowing the fastening means 4, 4’ to fasten the spring 5 to the light fixture 3, 6 or parts thereof, such as the top part 15 of the holder 6. The spring further comprises at least a second section 8, extending from the first section 7. The second sections 8, 8’ comprises a first support surface 9, adapted to contact the light fixture 3, 6 or parts thereof, preferably on the top surface of the flange 12, thereby preloading the second section 8 between the fastening means 4, 4’ attachment points of the first section 7 and the support surface 9.
[0030] The second section(s) 8, 8’ further comprises an inward spring section 10 extending inwards a distance towards the first section 7 on an inwards side of the preloaded spring 5 extending from the first support surface 9. The first support surface 9 is thus on the outside of a hairpin bend, such as an bay like bend, in the spring 5. The first support surface is supported against movement in a first direction supported. The inward spring section 10 comprises a second support surface 11 adapted to be supported against the light fixture 3, 6 or parts thereof, wherein the second support surface is supported against movement in a second direction, perpendicular to the first direction, when supported. The second support surface 11 is located on the inward facing side of the inward spring section 10. The term “inward” should be understood in relation to the drawings wherein the spring 5 forms a generally upside down U-shaped member whereby inward should be understood as on the inside, or towards the inside, of the perimeter of the spring 5 formed by the first section 7 and the two second sections 8, 8’. When spring is fastened to the holder 6, the inward spring section 10 is pretension between the first support surface 9, which is preferably supported on the flange 12, and the second support surface 11 of the inward spring section 10, which may be supported to the holder 6 or parts thereof.
[0031] Furthermore, in figure 2, the light fixture 3, 6 comprises a body portion or holder 6 with top part 15 with a cross measure smaller than an cut-out wherein the light fixture is to be installed, and a flange portion 12, at its lowermost part, protruding outwards, wherein he flange portion 12 has cross measure larger than the cut-out wherein the light fixture is to be, or adapted to be, installed. The first section 7 is adapted fastened to the top part 15 of the light fixture 3, 6 by the fastening means 4, and the first support surface 9 is supported on a top of the flange 12 or parts thereof. The term “top” should be understood in relation to the drawings, wherein “top” describes an uppermost part or section of said feature.
[0032] Furthermore, in figure 2, the light module 3 is illustrated as being adapted to be hingly or pivotally mounted to the holder 6 via one or more connection means 17, 17’, such that the light module 3 is movable in relation to the holder 6. The connection means 17, 17’ may be screws, bolts, hinges, rivets or speed rivets. When installed, the holder 6 will be fastened and stable in relation to the celling or wall by the fastening device/spring 5, while the light module 3 provides a light beam by a light source 16, is movable so a user can reposition and determining the angle of light beam in relation to the celling or wall. It should be understood that the light fixture 3,6 can be installed in holes or cut outs in other surfaces than a celling or wall, such as but not limited to, tables, furniture, floor, movable or installed objects, however, for convenience, the term celling will be used herein.
[0033] In an illustrated embodiment, the inward spring section 10 comprises at least an area comprising a width that is greater than the width of the first section 7 and/or the second section(s) 8, 8’ of the spring 5. As seen in figure 2, the holder comprises a receiving track 13 corresponding to the width of the inward spring section 10, wherein the receiving track 13 has a generally vertical extent adapted to receive the inward spring section 10 in the vertical direction and prevent movement of the inward spring section 10 in the horizontal plane. The receiving track 13 may comprises a pair of grooves or slits spaced apart in a parallel configuration.
[0034] Figure 3 illustrates a system wherein the light fixture fastening device mounted to a light fixture holder 6, seen as a sectional view from the side. The first section 7 of the spring 5 is attached to the top 15 of the holder 6 via the fastening means 4, 4’. In the illustrated embodiment, the spring 5 comprises two second sections 8, 8’, each second section extending from respective sides of the first section 7. When the spring is attached to the holder, the spring will be preloaded whereby the spring is curved, at least a distance, between the means for receiving fastening means 4, 4’ and the first support surface 9, wherein the inside of the curve defines an inside of the spring 5. The spring may be a stainless steel spring plate or sheet. The second section(s) 8, 8’ and the inward spring section(s) 10.10’ are adapted to both compress, and thus both provide a resilient counteracting force when the spring 5 is subjected to a deformation, thereby providing a doublet spring effect. As seen in figure 3, the first support surface(s) 9, 9’ is supported on top of the flange 12. As the vertical distance between the fastening means 4, 4’ and the top of the flange 12 are smaller than the length of the spring 5 between fastening means 4, 4’ attachment points and the support surface 9, the spring 5 will be preloaded and tensioned.
[0035] Figure 4 illustrates the light fixture device 3, 6 mounted in a cut-out or opening in a section, such as a celling portion, wherein the fixture attachment device attached the light fixture 3, 6 to the celling portion inside the opening. The system comprises two states, a fixed state as illustrated in figure 4, and an unfixed state as illustrated in figure 3. In the fixed state, as illustrated in figure 4, the light fixture 3, 6 comprising the spring 5 is fitted in the cut-out, wherein the spring 5 comprises a cross measure larger than the cross measure of the cut-out, thereby forcing the curvature of the second section(s) 8, 8’ to curve with a smaller radius than in the unfixed state, whereby the second section(s) 8, 8’ contacts the perimeter 14 of the cut-out and applies a downwards force on the top side of the cut-out and forcing the flange 12 upwards. The cross measure of the spring should be understood as the widest portion of the spring in the horizontal extent and the cross measure of the cut-out should be understood as the width of the cut out in the direction the spring 5 is orientated. The cut-out or opening, can be any shape, such as but not limited to, round, square, oval or polygonal.
[0036] Furthermore in the fixed state, the horizontal compression of the second section(s) 8, 8’ compresses the inward spring section(s) 10, 10’ against the holder 6 or track 13 of the holder 6, creates an outwards acting force acting on the inside of the cut-out, thereby creating two locking effects between light fixture 3, 6 and the cut-out, the “ballooning” of the second section(s) 8, 8’ and the outwards acting force acting on the inside of the cut-out. Wherein the unfixed state, the curvature of the second section(s) (8, 8’) has a larger radius than in the fixed state. As the device is attached to the downlight holder 6, and preloaded with spring force, it will create friction against the cutout wall – the described function will have an desirable effect on relative thick ceiling plates and in endless cutouts, such as bores or holes. As the spring device 5 have a larger cross measure than the cutout cross measure, the excess material will transform the device to a balloon shape and create a locking effect as described above, – the described function will have effect on relative thinner ceiling plates.
[0037] The holder 6 and the led housing 3 may be comprised of injection-molded polycarbonate, while the spring may be comprised of stainless steel.
[0038] Figures 1-3 illustrates a downlight light fixture with a movable light portion in relation to the frame or housing, it should be understood that the invention can be utilized on a variety of light fixtures to be installed in an opening. Examples of such embodiments are illustrated in figure 5 and 6. In figure 5, the fixation device comprising the spring 5 is attached to the light housing 3 via fastening means 4, whereby the light module 3 comprises a flange 12 at its lowermost part, wherein the spring is pretensioned between the flange 12 and the fastening means 4. In said embodiment, the light module 3 is non-pivotable in relation to the cutout when installed.
[0039] Figure 6 illustrates an exploded view of the invention wherein the receiving track 13 for receiving the inward spring section 10, 10 of the spring 5 is an integral part, or attached to, the light module 3 and wherein the fastening means 4, 4’ is adapted to be fastened to the top part 15 of the light module 3. In this embodiment the receiving track 13 corresponds to the width of the inward spring section 10, wherein the receiving track 13 has a generally vertical extent adapted to receive the inward spring section 10 in the vertical direction and prevent movement of the inward spring section 10 in the horizontal plane. This may be achieved with the receiving track 13 at least partly enclosing the inward spring section 10 when the spring is attached to the light fixture. The receiving track 13 may comprises a pair of grooves or slits spaced apart in a parallel configuration. When the spring is attached to the light module 3, the spring 5 will be preloaded whereby the spring 5 is curved, at least a distance, between the means for receiving fastening means 4, 4’ and the first support surface 9, wherein the inside of the curve defines an inside of the spring 5. The second section(s) 8, 8’ and the inward spring section(s) 10, 10’ are adapted to both compress, and thus both provide a resilient counteracting force when the spring 5 is subjected to a deformation, thereby providing a doublet spring effect. As seen in figure 6, the support surface(s) 9, 9’ is supported on top of the flange 12.
