Description

The present invention relates to a system for fighting forest fires, especially in hard-to-reach places.

The equipment that is usually used has little capacity both in terms of water supply and the way hoses and other equipment are run out. For forest fires in "land-hill" areas, systems with lighter vehicles such as ATVs and iron horses are often used. Where there are passable roads, fertilizer trucks from agriculture are also used. These have limited ability to leave forest vehicle roads, and thus the extinguishing ability is limited to a few tens of meters from the roadside. Furthermore, from US patent 4593855 a proposal is known for a pickup truck with a water tank, hose reel and motor-driven pump mounted on the loading platform. Here, neither accessibility nor the amount of water will be sufficient in impassable areas. US 2005/0126631 A1 shows a similar device where the vehicle is divided into a two-wheel tractor and a two-wheel truck which are interconnected by a universal joint and a mechanical drive shaft for transmitting power to the rear wheels. The truck includes a fixed, prismatic water tank. A water pump, a generator for operating the water pump and a hose reel are mounted on this. The device has limited capacity, as it must be light enough to be transported by helicopter to the scene of action.

The purpose of the invention is to remedy the above-mentioned shortcomings. This is achieved with a system as defined in the patent claims.

For a better understanding of the invention, it is explained in the following with the help of design examples illustrated in the attached, partly schematic drawings, where

Figur 1 er et oppriss av en lastetraktor forsynt med en del av utstyret i systemet ifølge oppfinnelsen; Figure 1 is an elevation of a loading tractor equipped with part of the equipment in the system according to the invention;

Figur 2 er et utsnitt av figur 1 i større målestokk; Figure 2 is a section of Figure 1 on a larger scale;

Figur 3 er et perspektivisk bilde av en lastetraktor forsynt med en annen del av utstyret i systemet ifølge oppfinnelsen; og Figure 3 is a perspective view of a loading tractor equipped with another part of the equipment in the system according to the invention; and

Figure 4 shows a helicopter which handles a further part of the equipment in the system according to the invention.

Figure 1 shows a loading tractor 1 for timber, also called a load carrier, which has a tractor 2 and a trailer 3 equipped with a loading crane 4 to be able to load logs onto the trailer's loading area 5. The loading tractor operates on all four pairs of wheels for maximum accessibility. An extinguishing rig 6 with a first platform 7, which carries a water tank 8, is placed on the cargo area 5. The tank's volume can be approximately 10 m³. The platform 7 also carries a hydraulically driven hose drum 9, which in the example shown is arranged behind the water tank 8. Other locations on the extinguishing rig can also be appropriate. A further hose drum 10 is mounted at the front of the tractor 2.

Figure 2 shows several details of the platform 7. A water cannon 11 is mounted on the water tank 8, which can be remotely controlled to cover the entire area around the loading tractor 1. Thereby, the loading tractor can go close to the fire and also have the opportunity to escape if it were to be trapped of an unexpected development of the fire. With some additional equipment, the water cannon can also be used for sprinkling.

A water pump 12 is also mounted on the platform 7, which supplies extinguishing water to a manifold 13 for connecting fire hoses and to the water cannon 11. The pump is driven by a hydraulic motor which receives power from the tractor's 2 hydraulic system. The pump can be self-priming and is used to fill the water tank 8 from a nearby source, such as a pond, stream or river. A separate pump may also be installed for this purpose.

Figure 3 shows another part of the equipment according to the invention. Here, the loading part 5 of the loading tractor 1 is provided with a hose rig 14, which comprises a second platform 15 which carries a number, here three, hose reels 16 and their control equipment.

Figure 4 shows a helicopter 17 which carries a special hose drum 18, which is arranged so that the hose can be pulled from the drum with the help of the helicopter. This is useful in situations where the loading tractor 1 with the hose rig 14 cannot come forward.

Figure 5 is a diagram of the water system on the extinguishing rig 6. Here, a water pump 12 is shown which is driven by a motor 19, preferably hydraulic. The pump receives water from the water tank 8 and can deliver this to the fire hose manifold 13, to the water cannon 11 or back to the tank, depending on how the valves 20-23 and the valve for the water cannon (not shown) are set. If only the valves 20 and 22 are open, the water is sent only to the manifold 13. If only the valves 21 and 23 are open and the pump is self-priming, it will draw water from the source 24 and fill the tank 8.

Figure 5 also schematically shows the hose drum 9 with hose 25. The drum is rotated with a reversible motor 26, so that the hose can be fed out or pulled in. The motor's shaft can be affected by a brake 27.

It will be understood that the term "platform" 6 used here and in the patent claims is not intended to be limited to a flat object, but should cover any form of supporting frame or undercarriage for the equipment and is preferably adapted to the distance between the load section's 5 normal timber supports. It will also be understood that the patent protection is not limited by the examples shown, but is defined by the provisions of the patent claims and their equivalents.
