Description
This invention relates to an open incubator. More specifically, it concerns an incubator where the incubator's ventilation is designed so that the ventilation air forms a shielding airflow around the incubator's patient bed in relation to the ambient air. It is therefore unnecessary to use a cover over the patient bed. The invention also includes a method for using the incubator.
Med pasientleie menes i denne sammenheng ikke bare pasientens liggeunderlag, men hele rommet nær pasienten. In this context, patient bed is not just the patient's bed, but the entire room close to the patient.
When treating, for example, prematurely born children, it is common to use an incubator. The purpose is, among other things, to ensure that parameters such as temperature and humidity can be maintained at a level suitable for the child in the area where the child is located.
WO 9921526 relates to an incubator which is provided with a dome-shaped cover. Ventilation air is supplied to the patient bed via inflow openings which are distributed around the patient bed. The ventilation air flows via an annular space delimited by the cover and a ring-shaped screen located on the inside of the cover.
It is of great importance that the patient during his stay in the incubator can be connected to medical equipment at the same time that access to the patient for care and treatment can take place without the aforementioned parameters changing to any significant extent.
It is obvious that an open incubator provides significantly better access to the patient than a closed incubator. Open incubators according to known technology are not, or only to an insufficient extent, temperature and humidity regulated at the patient bed. Cuvettes of this type are thus not very well suited to protect the smallest patients.
The purpose of the invention is to remedy or reduce at least one of the disadvantages of known technology.
The purpose is achieved according to the invention by the features indicated in the description below and in the subsequent patent claims.
An incubator according to the invention is provided with an optionally divided first opening for exhausting ventilation air, where the first opening essentially surrounds the patient bed. Within the first opening in relation to the patient bed, an optionally divided second opening is arranged which most advantageously also essentially surrounds the patient bed, through which a proportion of the flowing ventilation air is drawn away.
By withdrawing some ventilation air in the area within the first opening, at least part of the flowing ventilation air is directed towards the patient bed, so that the patient is shielded from the air from the surroundings.
The outgoing air is temperature and humidity regulated by means of a ventilation coil adjacent to the incubator. The ventilation air flowing out to the patient bed comprises a mixture of fresh air and recycled air.
It is known that, due to the child's relatively large skin surface and low heat capacity, the body temperature of prematurely born children takes on the temperature of the surroundings within a short time.
Experiments with an incubator according to the invention have shown that the temperature at the patient's bed can be maintained within a surprisingly small temperature interval when, in the context of the incubator, there is a significant temperature difference between the ambient air and the patient's bed.
In a preferred embodiment where a platform is located under the patient bed, the aforementioned first opening is designed so that it corresponds to an inlet channel in a removable cover. The cover together with the platform encloses the patient bed.
The cover is preferably provided with an inner cover, as an annular space is formed between the inner cover and the cover's outer cover. The aforementioned annulus which forms the cover's inlet channel leads to an opening in the inner casing through which the ventilation air flows towards the patient bed.
It can be advantageous to use a cover if medicines or gases are to be added to the ventilation air.
If the cover is equipped with maintenance openings, it is advantageous to establish a slight excess pressure inside the cover so that air from the surroundings cannot flow in through the maintenance openings.
It is advantageous both with regard to the noise and electro-magnetic radiation to which the patient is exposed that the incubator's ventilation unit is located at a distance from the patient's bed.
The ventilation unit can advantageously be placed in the incubator's base in such a way that the platform can be height-adjusted in relation to the floor of the room where the incubator is placed.
A further advantageous feature of the incubator according to the invention is that the patient bed, possibly with a cover, can be lifted away from its base and into a so-called transport incubator which is equipped with a corresponding ventilation unit without it being necessary to connect and disconnect electrical connections to, for example, fans and heating element.
In what follows, a non-limiting example of a preferred embodiment and method is described which is illustrated in the accompanying drawings, where: Fig. 1 shows a simplified section of an incubator according to the invention where arrows indicate the flow paths of the ventilation air; Fig. 2 shows the same as in fig. 1, but with an attached cover; and Fig. 3 shows on a larger scale the upper part of the incubator in section with the cover fitted.
In the drawings, the reference number 1 denotes an incubator comprising a platform 2 and a base 4 which can advantageously be provided with transport wheels not shown.
The incubator's 1 patient bed 6 is located above the platform 2, which is preferably adjustable in height in relation to the undercarriage 4.
A first opening 8 in the platform 2 surrounds the patient bed 6, while a second opening 10 surrounds the patient bed 6 between the first opening 8 and the patient bed 6.
A ventilation unit 12 which typically comprises the following components not shown; a fan, a heating element, a humidifying device as well as the necessary regulation equipment are in this preferred embodiment placed at the undercarriage 4.
The platform 2 is provided with a first channel 14 which communicates with the ventilation unit 12 via a first pipe 16 and which opens into the first opening 8. A second channel 18 opens into the second opening 10 and communicates with the ventilation unit 12 via a second pipe 20 A fresh air supply 22 which is equipped with a control valve 24 is designed to supplement fresh air to the ventilation unit 12, as the relative proportion of fresh air in relation to recirculation air can be set with the help of the control valve 24.
As an additional piece of equipment, particularly for use when, for example, gas or medicine is to be added to the ventilation air, the incubator can be supplied with a cover 26. The cover 26 comprises an outer cover 28 and an inner cover 30. The space between the outer cover 28 and the inner cover 30 forms an inlet channel 32 which, when the cover 26 is placed in its active position on the platform 2, communicates with the first opening 8. At its upper part, the inlet channel 32 opens into a third opening 34 in the inner casing 30.
In the drawings, the cover 26 is provided with continuous maintenance openings 36. The maintenance openings 3 6 run sealingly through the inlet channel 32.
Ventilation air flows from the ventilation unit 12 via the first pipe 16, the second channel 14 and the first opening 8 up above the platform 2, see fig 1.
A portion of the ventilation air is drawn back to the ventilation unit 12 via the second opening 10, the second channel 18 and the second pipe 20. The ventilation air flowing out through the first opening 8 causes ventilation air flowing out of the first opening 8 to be directed towards the patient bed 6 , whereby the ventilation air forms a protective air layer against the surrounding air.
The amount of air that is extracted through the second opening 10 is regulated using the control valve 24. The position of the control valve 24 determines how much fresh air will flow through the fresh air supply 22 to the ventilation unit 12.
When a cover 26 is used, ventilation air flows from the first opening 8 via the inlet channel 32 and the third opening 34 to the patient bed 6. Due to a prevailing overpressure at the patient bed 6, part of the ventilation air can flow out through the grooming openings 36.
A proportion of fresh air is supplied to the ventilation unit 12 via the fresh air supply 22 and the control valve 24, among other things, to compensate for the ventilation air that flows out through the grooming openings 36.
