Det er her tilveiebrakt et system og en fremgangsmåte for innsamling av EM-data i sammenheng med hydrokarbonundersøkelse, vurdering, utvikling og overvåkning, som tilveiebringer forbedret grunntilkopling mellom elektrodene og jorden eller overflateis og som en konsekvens det oppnås et sendt og mottatt signal av høyere kvalitet. Hvor overflaten av grunnen er mettet og frosset (f.eks. i tilfelle av en oppmåling utført på havis eller frossen tundra) kan oppmålingsinstrumentene (kilder og mottakere) koples mer pålitelig til overflaten ved boring eller smelting av hull inn i isen (eller frossen tundra) og innsetting av elektroder i resulterende hull. Hvert hull kan (eller kan ikke) fôres med materialer for å forsinke tapet av vann fra dette. Fortrinnsvis vil hvert av hullene (kilde og mottaker) bli fylt med vann (ferskt eller salt) før datainnsamlingen begynner.
