The use of materials to absorb electromagnetic radiation is widespread in the coating of (1) military installations that must avoid or reduce to a minimum detection by radar, (2) equipment that uses microwave radiation and (3)

Denne evne til å undertrykke elektromagnetisk stråling gjør det mulig for det absorberende materiale å forbruke (dissipere) elektromagnetisk energi i materialet, slik at refleksjonen av mikrobølger reduseres. is known for its ability to suppress electromagnetic radiation in the microwave frequency range. This ability to suppress electromagnetic radiation enables the absorbing material to consume (dissipate) electromagnetic energy in the material, so that the reflection of microwaves is reduced.

Synthetic dielectrics are usually formed by dispersing a magnetic powder or other natural absorption material in a dielectric material, such as plastic materials including thermo-plastic materials and thermosetting plastics, ceramic materials, wax types and the like. Synthetic dielectrics that are made by adding the aforementioned dielectric binders or

magnetiske oksyder eller ferritter, har meget ønskelige magnetiske og dielektriske egenskaper. magnetic oxides or ferrites, have very desirable magnetic and dielectric properties.
Use of solid ferrites, i.e. ferromagnetic ferrites made of iron oxide and other divalent metal oxides, as foil or plastic materials for reflective surfaces and objects to suppress or substantially reduce the reflection of electromagnetic energy, have many advantages. It has been found that mixed ferrites often provide good absorbing materials over a wide range of microwave frequencies. Furthermore, ferrites in the form of solid coatings have the higher permeabilities required for broadband operation. Such solid ferrite coatings can have higher permeabilities than ferrite powders exhibit$ because the magnetic properties of ferrite decrease significantly when ground into powder form" It has thus been found that ferrites which are both non-conducting and ferromagnetic provide the potentially optimal dielectric and magnetic properties in a simple composition or mixture.
Unfortunately, it has been found that in the conventional absorbent coatings containing ferrites, significant amounts of the heavy ferrites are required to achieve the desired absorption capacity. The resulting high density coatings of such conventional absorbents are largely undesirable because they are heavy and difficult to manufacture.
US patent no. 4,116,906 shows how ferrite-absorbing particles can be incorporated (together with attenuator particles/weakening particles) in a coating system based on the use of an organic solvent. But the patent does not show how to solve that problem, which concerns the need for large amounts of particles to achieve effective absorption.
In view of the aforementioned shortcomings and disadvantages of previously known materials for absorption of electromagnetic radiation, it is highly desirable to provide an absorption material which is light in weight and which can be conveniently produced in any form or applied as a coating on many different substrates or substrates, which coatings contain relatively low concentrations of the heavy magnetic particles necessary for absorption.
Resymé av oppf innelsen\ Summary of the invention\
The present invention concerns such an absorption mixture with a low density for electromagnetic radiation, which exhibits a high degree of efficiency in the absorption of electromagnetic radiation, especially at microwave frequencies. According to the invention, such a mixture (hereinafter referred to as ELM mixture) comprises (1) a dielectric solid material (hereafter referred to as dielectric matrix) in which (2) particles of colloidal size, with a maximum particle size of less than 1 pm, are dispersed , of an electromagnetic radiation absorber (hereinafter referred to as ELM absorber) and (3) particles of an electromagnetic radiation attenuator (hereinafter referred to as ELM attenuator), and the mixture is characterized by having a density of less than 6 g/cm <3> and that essentially all the absorbent particles are held in spatially separated conditions by the solid dielectric material. The concentration of ELM absorbent in the ELM mixture is advantageously sufficiently large to produce a magnetic loss tangent greater than 0.05 at a frequency of 2 gigahertz (GHz) and a thickness of the mixture of 2 cm. The concentration of ELM attenuator is sufficient to give the ELM mixture an attenuation greater than 0.5 decibels per centimeters (dB/cm) under the aforementioned conditions. Surprisingly, the low density ELM mixture according to the present invention exhibits dissipative properties that are higher than what would be expected from the concentrations of ELM absorbent used.
In another aspect, this invention provides a stable fluid dispersion of the aforementioned ELM attenuator and colloid-sized particles in the dielectric matrix containing colloidal or sub-colloidal particles of the ELM absorber. Surprisingly, such a dispersion can be applied as a coating

Fortrinnsvis blir partiklene av ELM-attenuatoren også holdt i det vesentlige adskilt med innbyrdes avstand i den dielektriske matriks. and dried to form a continuous film where the particles of the ELM absorbent are kept substantially spaced apart in the dielectric matrix. Preferably, the particles of the ELM attenuator are also kept substantially spaced apart in the dielectric matrix.
The ELM mixture according to this invention is particularly effective as an absorber for electromagnetic radiation in such applications as in paints and coatings used to reduce reflection on metal structures such as towers,
Denne ELM-blanding er også velegnet for støping av formede gjenstander og. for fremstilling som skum- eller fibermaterialer. bridges, ships, etc., as well as for microwave camouflage and radar camouflage, coatings for equipment in which absorption of microwave radiation is desired, such as in microwave ovens and microwave tanning devices, applications relating to the transport of solar energy from space satellites and the like. This ELM mixture is also suitable for casting shaped objects and. for manufacturing as foam or fiber materials.
Detaljert beskrivelse av illustrerende utførelsesformer Detailed description of illustrative embodiments

The low density ELM mixture according to the present invention has a density, a weakening and a magnetic loss tangent as indicated above. Preferred compositions have (1) densities in the range of from about 1.2 to about 5, more particularly from about 1.5 to about 3 g/cm 3 , (2) a magnetic loss tangent greater than 0.1, more particularly greater than 0.2 under the previously stated conditions, and (3) an attenuation greater than 1 dB/cm, most preferably greater than 2 dB/cm.
ELM-blandingene omfatter tre vesentlige komponenter: The ELM mixtures comprise three essential components:
(1) a dielectric solid matrix which acts as the continuous phase for the mixture, (2) a particulate ELM absorber which is kept substantially spaced apart in the matrix and (3) a particulate ELM attenuator. In preferred ELM compositions, the ELM attenuator is also substantially completely dispersed in the dielectric matrix.
Den dielektriske matriks er passende ethvert normalt The dielectric matrix is suitable for any normal
Preferably, it has an electrical resistivity greater than 10<6> ohms per centimeter (ohm/cm), more particularly greater than about 10<10> ohm/cm and most preferably from about 10^ to 10^ ohm/cm.
Examples of such suitable dielectrics include glass, ceramic materials, wax materials, plastic materials including thermo-plastic materials and thermosetting plastic types, rubber polymers and the like, with synthetic plastic materials as preferred materials. Among the synthetic plastic materials, polymers are preferred which are water-insoluble and are prepared from hydrophobic monomers which are essentially immiscible with water, i.e. that the monomer forms a separate phase when 5 g of the monomer is mixed with 100 g of water. Such monomers which are immiscible with water will polymerize under emulsification polymerization conditions to form a water-insoluble polymer which will exist in the form of a stable aqueous colloidal dispersion, usually with the aid of suitable surfactants.
The ELM absorber is a material (1) that absorbs electromagnetic radiation with frequencies in the range from about 0.3 to about 20 GHz and (2) that is in the form of particles of colloidal or sub-colloidal size. Preferred ELM absorbers can further be characterized as paramagnetic or superparamagnetic due to their small size. Examples of such materials are compounds of magnetic metals, such as ferromagnetic oxides or ferrites, e.g. Fe^O^ as well as ferromagnetic ferrites formed from iron oxide and various divalent metal oxides such as metal oxides of nickel, zinc and manganese; magnetic metals such as iron, cobalt and nickel and their alloys, as well as other known ELM absorbing materials, e.g. carbon black, graphite and the like. The ELM absorbent generally contains particles having a maximum dimension less than about 1 micrometer (um), preferably in the range of from about 0.01 to about 0.7 um. Of these materials, the magnetic metal compounds are preferred, with Fe^O^ being the most preferred material.
The ELM attenuator is preferably a ferromagnetic material capable of providing microwave attenuation as previously described. The ELM attenuator is in the form of particles with a dimension greater than 1 µm, preferably in the range from about 1.5 to about 100 µm, particularly from about 2 to about 75 µm. Examples of such weakening materials are iron, cobalt, nickel and other ferromagnetic materials as well as alloys of such metals. Among these materials, metallic iron is preferred, with carbonyl iron being the most preferred. However, it will be understood that in addition to carbonyl iron, metallic iron produced by other methods, such as electrolytically precipitated iron, reduced iron and finely divided iron, is preferred.
Ved fremstilling av de ELM-absorberende blandinger med When producing the ELM-absorbing mixtures with
lav tetthet ifølge denne oppfinnelse, er det fordelaktig å dispergere ELM-absorbenten i den dielektriske matriks slik at denne utgjør en kontinuerlig fase som holder partiklene av ELM-absorbenten hovedsakelig adskilt med innbyrdes avstand low density according to this invention, it is advantageous to disperse the ELM absorbent in the dielectric matrix so that this constitutes a continuous phase which keeps the particles of the ELM absorbent substantially separated by a distance
Any of many different conventional mixing procedures for incorporating colloidal or sub-colloidal particles into dielectric binders may be suitably employed for this purpose. However, it is preferred that the dielectric matrix with the ELM absorbent dispersed in it (hereinafter referred to as dielectric/absorbent) is prepared by first forming an aqueous dispersion of the ELM absorbent by bringing colloidal or sub-colloidal particles of the absorbent into contact with an aqueous dissolution of a water-soluble surface-active agent or an emulsifier, so that a dispersion containing from around 5 to about 70% by weight of absorbent particles is produced. Examples of preferred aqueous dispersions of ELM absorbents are the so-called ferrofluids, e.g. as described in US Patent 3,981,844, preferably those with an average particle diameter in the range of from about 0.05 to about 0.1 µm. Preferably, such fluids are aqueous dispersions of the magnetic metals which are stabilized by the presence of surfactants, emulsifiers and/or chemical dispersants as described below.
Blackley i Emulsion Polymerization, Wiley and Sons, kapitel 7 (1975) og andre overflateaktive midler er listet opp i McCutcheon<*>s Detergents and Emulsifiers, 19 80 Annual North Americal Edition, McCutcheon, Inc., Morristown, N.J. Typically, suitable surfactants, dispersants or emulsifiers include salts of fatty acids such as potassium oleate, metal alkyl sulfates such as sodium lauryl sulfate, salts of alkylaryl sulfonic acids such as sodium dodecylbenzene sulfonate, multivalent soaps such as sodium polyacrylate and alkali metal salts of methyl methacrylate/2-sulfoethyl methacrylate copolymers and other sulfoalkyl acrylate copolymers and other anionic surfactants such as the dihexyl ester of sodium sulforauric acid, nonionic surfactants such as the nonionic condensates of ethylene oxide with propylene oxide, ethylene glycol and/or propylene glycol, and cationic surfactants such as alkylamine guanidine polyoxyethanols as well as many different micelle-generating substances as described by D.C. Blackley in Emulsion Polymerization, Wiley and Sons, Chapter 7 (1975) and other surfactants are listed in McCutcheon<*>'s Detergents and Emulsifiers, 1980 Annual North American Edition, McCutcheon, Inc., Morristown, N.J. Among the suitable surface-active agents are also included the surface-active polymers (often called multi-valent soaps), e.g. such as are described in US Patent No. 3,965,032.
19, 147-151 (1980). Among the suitable surfactants, the anionic variants such as the potassium salts of functionalized oligomers are preferred, e.g. of the "Polywet" type sold by Uniroyal Chemical. Such surfactants or emulsifiers are used in sufficient quantities to produce a stable dispersion of the ELM absorbent in water. Preferably, such surfactants are used in concentrations in the range from about 0.2 to about 10, especially from about 1 to about 6% by weight, based on the aqueous phase. Particularly desirable processes for making such aqueous colloidal dispersions of the ELM absorbent are described in US Patents 3,826,667, 3,981,844, 3,843,540 and Industrial Engineering Production and Research Development, vol. 19, 147-151 (1980).
The aqueous dispersion of the ELM absorbent is then combined with the water immiscible monomer as described herein to form the desired emulsion by normal mixing procedures, e.g. by passing both the dispersion and the monomer through a high shear mixing device such as a Waring mixer, a homogenizer or ultrasonic mixer. As a preferred option becomes. the monomer added continuously to the aqueous dispersion of the ELM absorbent during polymerization. The monomer advantageously takes the form of an aqueous emulsion of the monomer, which emulsion is maintained by a water-soluble monomer and/or a water-soluble emulsifier as described above. As another alternative, the aqueous emulsion of the ELM absorbent and the water-immiscible monomer can be prepared by adding colloidal or sub-colloidal particles of the ELM absorbent to an existing aqueous emulsion of monomer. In such cases, it is often desirable to add additional emulsifier or surfactant to the emulsion prior to or simultaneously with the addition of the particles of the ELM absorbent. In the emulsion of ELM absorbent and water-immiscible monomer in water, the aqueous phase is present in a sufficient proportion to be the continuous phase in the emulsion. The ELM absorbent is present in sufficient proportions to give the particulate dielectric/absorbent the desired dissipative properties. The water-immiscible monomer is present in an amount sufficient to enclose or encapsulate the ELM absorbent upon polymerization. The emulsifying agent and/or the surfactant is present to
Preferably, the emulsion contains from about 0.1 to about 25% by weight of ELM absorbent, from about 1 to about 30% by weight of monomer and
en gjenværende mengde av den vandige fase innbefatter emulgeringsmiddel (overflateaktivt middel), katalysator og lignende. a remaining amount of the aqueous phase includes emulsifier (surfactant), catalyst and the like.
Eksempler på egnede monomerer som ikke er blandbare med vann og som kan anvendes for fremstilling av den forannevnte dielektrikum/absorbent omfatter monovinylidenaromat-monomerer såsom styren, vinyltoluen, t-butylstyren, klorstyren, vinyl-benzylklorid og vinylpyridin; alkylestere av a,0-etylenisk umettede syrer såsom etylakrylat, metyImetakrylat, butylakrylat og 2-etylheksylakrylat» umettede estere av mettede karboksylsyrer såsom vinylacetat, umetLede halogenider såsom vinylklorid og vinylidenklorid; umettede nitriler såsom akrylnitril; Examples of suitable monomers which are not miscible with water and which can be used for the production of the aforementioned dielectric/absorbent include monovinylidene aromatic monomers such as styrene, vinyltoluene, t-butylstyrene, chlorostyrene, vinyl benzyl chloride and vinylpyridine; alkyl esters of α,O-ethylenically unsaturated acids such as ethyl acrylate, methyl methacrylate, butyl acrylate and 2-ethylhexyl acrylate; unsaturated esters of saturated carboxylic acids such as vinyl acetate; unsaturated halides such as vinyl chloride and vinylidene chloride; unsaturated nitriles such as acrylonitrile;
diener såsom butadien og isopren, og lignende. dienes such as butadiene and isoprene, and the like.
Of these monomers, monovinylidene aromatics such as styrene and alkyl acrylates such as butyl acrylate are preferred.
In addition to the aforementioned monomer which is not miscible with water, relatively smaller proportions can be used, e.g. less than 10, preferably less than 5% by weight, based on the total monomer component, of a water-soluble monomer such as an ethylenically unsaturated carboxylic acid or its salts such as acrylic acid or sodium acrylate; methacrylic acid, itaconic acid and maleic acid; an ethylenically unsaturated carboxamide such as acrylamide; vinyl pyrrolidone; hydroxyalkyl acrylates and methacrylates such as hydroxyethyl acrylate, hydroxypropyl acrylate and hydroxyethyl methacrylate; aminoalkyl esters of unsaturated acids such as 2-aminoethyl methacrylate; epoxy functional monomers such as glycidyl methacrylate; sulfoalkyl esters of unsaturated acids such as 2-sulfoethyl methacrylate; ethylenically unsaturated quaternary ammonium compounds such as vinylbenzyltrimethylammonium chloride. It is critical in the practical manufacture of this preferred embodiment that such water-soluble monomers are not used in such large quantities that the resulting polymer becomes soluble in water. Particularly effective monomer recipes for carrying out this invention are those containing from about 20 to about 90% by weight of styrene, from about 10 to about 80% by weight of alkyl acrylate such as butyl acrylate, and from about 0.01 to about 2% by weight of unsaturated carboxylic acids such as acrylic acid, with the aforementioned weight % parts based on the weight of the total monomers.
The emulsion polymerization conditions used in practicing this preferred embodiment of the invention are generally free-radical type polymerization carried out in the presence of a radical initiator such as a peroxygen compound, an azo catalyst, ultraviolet light and the like. Preferably, this polymerization is carried out in the presence of a water-soluble peroxygen compound at temperatures in the range from about 50 to about 90°C. The emulsion is usually stirred during the polymerization period to maintain an adequate feed or transfer. The concentration of catalyst is normally in the range of from about 0.005 to about 8, but preferably from about 0.01 to about 5% by weight, based on total monomer. Examples of suitable catalysts include inorganic persulfate compounds such as sodium persulfate, potassium persulfate, ammonium persulfate; peroxides such as hydrogen peroxide, t-butyl hydroperoxide, dibenzene peroxide and dilauroyl peroxide; azo catalysts such as azobisisobutyronitrile, and other common free radical generating compounds. Furthermore, different forms of free-radical-generating irradiation devices such as ultraviolet radiation, electron beams and gamma rays can be used. Optionally, a redox catalyst mixture can be used when the polymerization temperature is in the range from about 25 to about 80°C. Examples of redox catalyst mixtures include a peroxygen mixture as described above, preferably potassium persulphate or t-butyl hydroperoxide and a reducing component such as sodium metabisulphite and sodium formaldehyde hydrosulphite. It is also appropriate to use different chain transfer agents such as mercaptans, e.g. dodecyl mercaptan; dialkyl xanthogen disulfides; diaryl disulphides and others specified by Blackley as mentioned above in chapter 8 and with concentrations as described there.

Hvis den tørkes inneholder partiklene av dielektrikum/ELM-absorbent fortrinnsvis fra omkring 10 til omkring 80 og helst fra omkring 15 til omkring 70 vekt% av ELM-absorbent og fra omkring 90 til omkring 20, fortrinnsvis fra omkring 85 til omkring 30 vekt% av den dielektriske matrikspolymer. aqueous dispersion of the dielectric/ELM absorbent particles is brought out of the polymerization vessel and (1) the dispersion is used as is or (2) the unreacted monomer and other volatiles are removed to form a concentrated dispersion which is then used as a paint base for the ELM mixture or (3) the dielectric/ELM absorbent particles can be separated from the aqueous continuous phase in the dispersion by conventional means such as spray drying or drying under vacuum. If dried, the particles of dielectric/ELM absorbent preferably contain from about 10 to about 80 and more preferably from about 15 to about 70% by weight of ELM absorbent and from about 90 to about 20, preferably from about 85 to about 30% by weight of the dielectric matrix polymer.

A. Fremstilling av vandig dispersjon av Fe.,0. A. Preparation of aqueous dispersion of Fe.,0.
( ELM- absorbent) (ELM absorbent)
En vandig dispersjon av magnetisk jernoksyd (Fe-jO^) An aqueous dispersion of magnetic iron oxide (Fe-jO^)
(ELM absorbent) is produced by mixing aqueous solutions of ferric and ferrous salts in such quantities that a molar ratio Fe/Fe of ^ 2:1 is maintained. Magnetic iron oxide is then precipitated at 0-10°C by rapid addition of IN NH^OH and vigorous stirring until a pH of 9-10 is reached. Immediately thereafter, the dispersant is introduced with stirring into the aqueous medium containing the precipitated iron oxide and the mixture is heated at 90°C for 1 hour. During this period, hydrochloric acid is added until the pH of the mixture reaches 7.5. The particles of precipitated iron oxide are washed with deionized water and redispersed in deionized water containing ^0.5 g of a potassium salt of a functionalized oligomer ("Polywet" KX-4 sold by Uniroyal Chemical) per g of precipitated iron oxide, using an ultrasound probe. The magnetization of the dispersed iron oxide is measured using a technique based on Collpit's oscillator circuit.

Peterson et al., in the Journal of Colloidal and Interfacial Science, 70, 3 (1977), er anslått å være 135 gauss. To a 3-necked flask and fitted with a stirrer, two additional outlet channels and a condenser, is added a mixture of 507 g of a 28.5% solids dispersion of Fe^O^ (200 gauss and an average particle size of less than 0.08 µm) and 203 g of deionized water. This mixture is then heated under a nitrogen atmosphere to 90°C with stirring. At this temperature of 90°C, a monomer stream and a stream of aqueous surfactant are introduced separately through the two additional channels into the bottle, each stream being introduced at a rate of 6 ml/min. over a period of 6 5 minutes. The monomer stream consists of 64 g styrene, 16 g butyl acrylate and 3 g t-butyl hydroperoxide. The aqueous stream consists of 110 g of deionized water, 2.9 g of the potassium salt of a functionalized oligomer ("Polywet" KX-4) and 2 g of sodium formaldehyde hydrosulfite. The resulting reaction mixture is stirred and kept under nitrogen at 90°C for a further 1/2 hour. The resulting 25% solids latex is concentrated by vacuum distillation to a 30.3% solids latex (dielectric/ELM absorbent) with dispersed particles having a polymer as well as a magnetic character. The particles in this latex have a narrow particle size distribution and an average particle diameter of 0.11 µm as determined by hydrodynamic chromatography. The latex remains stable in an applied magnetic field of 1800 gauss and exhibits properties common to magnetic colloids. For example, such magnetic colloids are magnetizable liquids that are instantly demagnetized when a magnetic field is removed and raise an object when a magnetic field is applied. Magnetization of the latex using a Collpits oscillator circuit technique as described by E.A. Peterson et al., in the Journal of Colloidal and Interfacial Science, 70, 3 (1977), is estimated to be 135 gauss.

900 kg and 230°C for 2 minutes. The sample is cooled to room temperature and the pressure on the sample is released. The resulting plate of the ELM mixture is machined into two flat discs with a diameter of 2.54 cm and a thickness of 0.64 cm and 0.32 cm, respectively.
C) av tørre partikler Another ELM mixture (Sample No. 2) is prepared according to the preceding procedure using 56.5 g of dry powder of the latex and 18.8 g of carbonyl iron. The sample is similarly mixed, molded and shaped into discs. For comparison purposes, a third sample (sample no. C) is made of dry particles
av lateksen støpt og formet til skiver ved hjelp av den forannevnte prosedyre. of the latex cast and formed into disks using the aforementioned procedure.
Alle de forannevnte prøver undersøkes med hensyn til ELM-absorpsjon og resultatene er angitt i tabell I. All the aforementioned samples are examined with respect to ELM absorption and the results are given in Table I.
C. As can be seen from the data in Table I, the mixtures according to the present invention (samples no. 1 and 2) have significantly better attenuation at a given frequency than the mixture according to sample no. C.
