Description
The present invention relates to a method for processing ferroalloys in the form of fine-grained, oxidation-prone material which essentially consists of at least one of the metals manganese, chromium or silicon in metallic form. In particular, the invention relates to a method for taking care of the fine powder and dust that falls during conventional crushing after casting of the ferroalloys in question. A development form of the invention concerns a further refinement in the production of refined ferromanganese.
In the production of ferroalloys, the finished product is crushed after casting to a piece size that is suitable for the products' further use. During this crushing, a large proportion of fine-grained material is obtained. Normally falls approx. 10% of the total production as such a financial share. This final part is difficult to set aside as it gives poor yields when alloying and makes it difficult for customers to manage materials rationally. The fine powder is also not suitable for direct supply to either a blast furnace or an electric low-pitched furnace for remelting. Both processes require a closed coating of coarser material to work well. The supply of fine powder clogs the furnaces and gives rise to blowing and other unwanted effects that disrupt smooth operation. The ferroalloys in question are also prone to oxidation - have a high oxygen affinity - which, together with the fine-grained form, makes it difficult for the material to be remelted with good yield and reasonable economy.
The purpose of the present invention is to take care of the fine "waste" from the crushing of ferroalloys which predominantly consist of the substances manganese, chromium and/or silicon in metallic form.
An object of the invention is also to provide a method which, in a developed form, also allows the production of refined ferromanganese.
These purposes are achieved through the present method, which is characterized by what appears from the subsequent claims.
In the present method, a reactor is used with associated equipment for injecting gas/powder mixtures below the surface of a melt located in the reactor and with devices such as electric induction heating in the smelt. A so-called "UDDACON" reactor, for example described in US patent no. 3,934,863, has proven to be suitable. This reactor is equipped with a flow inductor. One can also think of reactors with a crucible inductor or other inductive heating. In the present method, the fine-grained material, which essentially consists of at least one of the metals manganese, chromium and/or silicon in metallic form, is divided into two fractions. The first fraction has grain sizes above a certain given grain size, which is preferably between 1 and 2 mm, while the second fraction has smaller grain sizes. The first "coarser" fraction is added from above in the reactor which contains a starting melt which conveniently has the same chemical composition or at least contains substantially the same alloying elements as the alloy to be worked up. The second, very fine-grained fraction is added to a so-called powder syringe and injected through a nozzle, suitably with the help of an inert carrier gas and/or Ar) under the surface of the melt. This results in a bath movement which is very favorable partly for dissolving the fine-grained material that is blown in and partly for the somewhat coarser, but still fine-grained material that is added from above in relation to the bath. Heat is supplied to the bath electrically through the inductor to such an extent that the temperature in the melt is always above the liquidus temperature of the material.
I stedet for en inert gass er det i og for seg Instead of an inert gas, it is in and of itself
In this case, however, there is a certain loss of material due to oxidation.
Forurensninger i materialet, fortrinnsvis kalsium Impurities in the material, preferably calcium
Slag formers and oxygen are added appropriately by injection. The oxygen can be oxygen gas, but suitably consists of an oxide, preferably an oxide of a metal in the alloy to be worked up.
To prevent oxidation of the material by the oxygen in the air drawn in from the mouth of the reactor reacting with the metals in the alloy, an inert gas, preferably argon or nitrogen, can be blown in over the bath surface in the reactor. The same effect can also be achieved by using argon and/or nitrogen as a carrier gas during the injection.
When producing refined ferromanganese, the temperature of the melt produced in the manner described above is raised to a suitable refining temperature, i.e. a temperature which normally lies between 1500 and 1700°C. A suspension of manganese oxide is then injected in a carrier gas below the bath surface, whereby, in the event that the initially produced melt consists of a ferromanganese-carbonaceous melt, the melt is refreshed to a lower carbon content. As manganese oxide, in this case, the manganese oxide-containing dust that is obtained in the cooling process by a significant amount of manganese evaporating and burning to manganese oxide with the atmospheric oxygen above the converter is suitably used. This thus formed dust consists predominantly of Mn-jO^. The dust is very fine-grained and is taken care of in a filter before it is injected together with dilution gas, which is suitably made up of oxygen gas. Optionally, additional oxygen gas is also added. A certain amount of manganese is suggested. during freshman year. This slag can be reduced with FeSiMn, FeSi, Al or another reducing agent to the extent permitted by the product's analysis interval. The reducing agent is suitably added in powder form, preferably as an inexpensive fine fraction while simultaneously stirring with injected gas or gas/powder mixture.
When the initially produced melt consists of ferrosilicon manganese, the refining of the material into refined ferromanganese essentially consists in removing the main part of the silicon content. For this, manganese oxide is injected in the form of MnO, which can be made up of pre-reduced Mn^O^. Argon is used as carrier gas in this case.

The grain size distribution of the input silicon manganese and carbonaceous ferromanganese can be seen from table 2. The manganese oxide dust had a grain size of the order of 50 ym.
Forsøk I - Omsmelting av ferrosilisiummangan, FeSiMn Experiment I - Remelting of ferrosilicon manganese, FeSiMn
The objective of the experiment has primarily been to study the yield of added material. An initial melt of pig iron with the following composition in % by weight was added to the reactor vessel: 0.29 Mn, 1.34 Si, 3.30 C, 0.04 Ni, 0.004 N, the rest iron and impurities. The melt was doped with 25 kg of electrolyte nickel so that the change in melt weight could be followed during the course of the experiment.
The melting of a coarse fraction of FeSiMn (> 2 mm) when applied through a downpipe from the converter top was first started with a plugged blast nozzle, which meant that the melt was only stirred by the pumping action of the inductor. This is relatively powerful at high effects and decreases with decreasing effect. As the added material spread over the entire bath surface and quickly gave rise to sagging and bridging, the full effect of the inductor could not be used due to overtemperature in the smelting. During this melting period only 300-400 kW was therefore used.
After the melting of the coarse fraction, the powder syringe was filled with material sieved to a grain size of < 2 mm. This material was well fluidizable, but the construction of the blast nozzle was not suitable for particle sizes up to 2 mm. Constant blockages were thus achieved in the blast nozzle and therefore the syringe was emptied and the material sieved to < 1 mm. The injection could then be carried out without any problems. Air as carrier gas was replaced with argon after the first injection round.
Sammenfattede data for forsøk I: The content change during the experiment with respect to Mn and Si is plotted in fig. 2. The Mn curve shows the expected course with a decreasing . increase as the melt weight increases, and the same applies to Si. The trial ended with casting of 3,070 kg. Summary data for trial I:
Experiment II - Remelting of FeSiMn according to experiment I and production of refined FeMn.
The aim of this experiment was partly to study the yield of added material as well as to study the red-ox process in the production of refined FeMn. The purpose of the experiment was more specifically to study the possibilities of producing a refined quality of FeMn with a medium carbon content. The remaining sump from trial I was doped with 20 kg of nickel to determine the starting amount of melting. The experiment was then initiated with an injection of 255 kg of a fine fraction FeSiMn (grain size < 1 mm), after which application of one of the coarse fractions (> 2 mm) of FeSiMn from the top was started. After a small addition with a plugged blast mold and stagnant bath, where the same problems as in the previous experiment arose, the blast nozzle was opened and the remaining coarse fraction added from the converter top while simultaneously injecting the fine fraction suspended in argon. The fusion therefore went smoothly and could be carried out quickly with full power output on the inductor.
Totalt ble 2055 kg FeSiMn tilsatt og smeiten fikk • følgende kjemiske sammensetning (vekt-%) før Si-oksydasjonen begynte: 53,8 Mn, 13,65 Si, 2,06 C, 0,67 Ni, 0,004 N, resten jern og forurensninger. A total of 2,055 kg of FeSiMn was added and the melt had • the following chemical composition (% by weight) before the Si oxidation began: 53.8 Mn, 13.65 Si, 2.06 C, 0.67 Ni, 0.004 N, the rest iron and pollutants.
The Si oxidation and the Mn reduction (sample 13-29, fig.3) were carried out by injection of manganese oxide dust, Mn^C^, (composition see table 1) and lime.
The change in content of Mn and Si in the smelting, the MnO content in the slag and the amount of applied and injected material during the experiment are illustrated in the diagram in fig. 3. The silicon oxidation is a linear function of the amount of added oxygen up to approx. 2% Si, which means that a constant proportion of the oxygen reacts with Si down to this point. This is underlined by the MnO analysis, see the diagram in fig. 3, where the MnO content is fairly constant between 15-18% for Si content > 2%. In the continued Si oxidation from approx. 2%, an increasing proportion of oxygen goes to oxidation of Mn. The final step from 0.32% to 0.11% Si involves a sharp rise in the MnO content from 22% to 57%. However, the latter value is uncertain.
Sammenfattende data for forsøk II fremgår av tabell 4. Summary data for experiment II appears in table 4.
Startvekt FeSiMn: 3.107 - 3.549 kg (beregnet fra Ni-ånalyse) Tilført mengde FeSiMn, grovfraksjon > 1 mm: 1.800 kg Injisert mengde FeSiMn, < 1 mm: 255 kg Starting weight FeSiMn: 3,107 - 3,549 kg (calculated from Ni analysis) Added amount of FeSiMn, coarse fraction > 1 mm: 1,800 kg Injected amount of FeSiMn, < 1 mm: 255 kg
Injisert mengde Mn304: 2.487 kg (se også tabell 1) Smeltevekt etter Si-oksydasjon: 4.788 - 5590 kg (beregnet fra Ni-analyse) Injected amount of Mn304: 2,487 kg (see also table 1) Melt weight after Si oxidation: 4,788 - 5,590 kg (calculated from Ni analysis)
After the silicon oxidation, a slag reduction can also be carried out by adding FeSiMn, whereby the Si content in the smelting increases and the MnO content in the slag is greatly reduced. However, results from these tests, test 30-37, are not illustrated here.
Forsøk III - Omsmelting av karbonholdig FeMn Experiment III - Remelting of carbonaceous FeMn
Etter denne innsmelting hadde smeiten nådd opp til blestdysen og den fortsatte innsmeltingen kunne deretter gjennomføres under samtidig injeksjon av finfraksjon, < 1 mm gjennom blestdysen, og påsetting fra konvertertoppen av grovfraksjonen, Remaining sump from trial II, whereby the slag had been reduced again with FeSiMn, was again doped with nickel to determine the amount of starting melt. In this experiment, the starting sump was very small and did not reach the level of the blast nozzle, which initially made fusion difficult. About. 1 tonne of carbonaceous FeMn of the coarse fraction > 1 mm must be added in small portions so as not to cause excessively strong hangings and bridging. After this fusion, the melt had reached the blast nozzle and the continued fusion could then be carried out during the simultaneous injection of fine fraction, < 1 mm through the blast nozzle, and application of the coarse fraction from the converter top,
>.1 mm. Denne innsmeltingsmetode gikk meget godt. >.1 mm. This fusion method went very well. By injecting material during the entire melting, a very fine stirring pattern was achieved in the converter and all added material was quickly and completely dissolved.
The analyzes for Mn and Si in the smelting are plotted in the diagram in fig. 4 and also the accumulated amount of added carbonaceous FeMn.
Sammenfattende data for forsøk III fremgår av tabell 5. Summary data for experiment III appear in table 5.

The tests carried out have shown that it is possible to process such material in a reactor of the "UDDACON" type. which falls when crushing FeSiMn and FeMn. Different methods for melting material in the reactor were tested. The experiments showed that the most advantageous method is to add the coarse fraction (> 1-2 mm) from the top of the reactor at the same time that the finest fraction is injected through a blast nozzle below the surface of the melt. Melting in a still bath without injection stirring was ineffective, while melting by exclusively injecting the fine fraction involves a waste of available material.
In principle, however, as much material as possible should be injected into the forge. The practical limit is set by the ability of the powder sprayer to fluidize the material and the construction of the blast nozzle. In the experiments carried out, this practical limit was approx. 1 mm. In the case of another blast nozzle construction, however, it can be assumed that the practical upper limit for injectable material is approx. 2 mm.
