Description
The present invention relates to methods for leaching a metal sulphide with nitric acid.
Hitherto proposed methods for recovering metals from sulphide ores usually include roasting an ore concentrate in air or other treatment of the ore at high temperature. For example, molybdenum extraction has been proposed where a molybdenite concentrate is roasted in air. Such processes result in the formation of gaseous products such as oxides of sulfur which cause pollution if released to the atmosphere. With a view to increasing environmental awareness, attempts have been made to develop methods for the recovery of metals from sulphide ores where it is possible to avoid or at least significantly reduce pollution caused by gaseous sulfur oxides.
In addition to this, it has largely been necessary to further purify the molybdenum oxides that have been produced by the methods proposed to date.
Rhenium, for hvilket en hovedkilde er molybdenitt, er Rhenium, for which a major source is molybdenite, is
Vesentlig gjenvinning av rhenium sammen med molybden vil øke den kommersielle anvendelig-het av enhver molybdengjenvinningsprosess. has become a valuable utility metal, e.g. in catalytic and other applications. Hitherto proposed methods for the recovery of molybdenum from molybdenite have usually not included the simultaneous recovery of both rhenium and molybdenum. Substantial recovery of rhenium along with molybdenum will increase the commercial applicability of any molybdenum recovery process.
Wet processes have so far been proposed for possible use in the recovery of metals from sulphide ores. Because iron is a major impurity in many sulphide ores, any wet process should advantageously produce at least some separation of iron from the metals to be recovered.
Det er kjent en fremgangsmåte for utluting av et metallsulfid med salpetersyre for å bevirke utluting av i det vesentlige alt metallsulfid, hvori materialet omsettes i væskefase i A method is known for leaching a metal sulphide with nitric acid to effect leaching of essentially all metal sulphide, in which the material is reacted in liquid phase in
en reaksjonssone ved en reaksjonstemperatur på ikke mindre enn 150°C, med mindre salpetersyre enn det som teoretisk er nødvendig for å bevirke den ønskede utluting, hvorved oksyder av nitrogen som dannes ved utlutingen, holdes innen reaksjonssonen og omsettes med oksygen og vann for å regenerere salpetersyre. a reaction zone at a reaction temperature of not less than 150°C, with less nitric acid than is theoretically necessary to effect the desired leaching, whereby oxides of nitrogen formed by the leaching are held within the reaction zone and reacted with oxygen and water to regenerate nitric acid.
Kolta i "Oxidizing Leach of Sulfide Concentrates and Other Materials Catalyzed by Nitric Acid", side 135, i "Result of Papers Published from the International Mineral Congress", Technical Papers, 7th Meeting, New York, N.Y. 1964, utgitt 1965. Recovery of molybdenum as molybdenum oxide from molybdenite concentrates using an oxidizing leaching liquid containing nitric acid has been proposed by C. Bjørling and G.A. Kolta in "Oxidizing Leach of Sulfide Concentrates and Other Materials Catalyzed by Nitric Acid", page 135, in "Result of Papers Published from the International Mineral Congress", Technical Papers, 7th Meeting, New York, N.Y. 1964, published 1965. The application of a similar method to other non-ferrous metals is suggested in US Patent No. 2,805,936.
Videre kompliserer nærvær av forurensende metaller eller metalloider gjenvinningen av f.eks. molybden, recovery of molybdenum using nitric acid requires relatively high concentrations of nitric acid. In order to recover around 99% molybdenum oxide, it is further necessary to at least partially neutralize the sulfuric acid that is formed in the oxidation liquor. Neutralization of the sulfuric acid that forms in the oxidizing leaching liquid before recovery of dissolved molybdenum is both time-consuming and expensive. Neutralization of the sulfuric acid also removes the possibility of reducing the costs of selling the sulfuric acid. Furthermore, the presence of polluting metals or metalloids complicates the recovery of e.g. molybdenum,
og fremstillingen av et produkt med høy renhet er også vanske-ligere. and the production of a high purity product is also more difficult.
De oksydative utlutingsprosesser krever to trinn. The oxidative leaching processes require two steps. In the first step, nitrates are formed, and in step no. 2 further sulphide and sulfuric acid are added to the nitrate without the addition of oxygen to form free nitric acid which reacts with the sulphide when sulfuric acid is added. The nitric acid used is completely consumed, and all oxides of nitrogen that are formed are regenerated into nitric acid outside the reactor.
The method proposed so far requires the use of moderate acidity with a constant pH value during the process. Sulfuric acid is added at the beginning of the process and then during the process to maintain a constant pH value. Temperatures above 119°C, the melting point for sulphur, cannot be used with the method proposed so far, and moderate pressures are necessary. The importance of a high conversion rate for sulphide sulfur to elemental sulfur instead of to sulphate is emphasized in the known method, and the conversion of sulphide sulfur to sulphate at an alkaline pH value is described as already known. The sulphide ores of iron and copper must be roasted before using the known method, and the reaction time required for total oxidation is usually over 1 hour. The consumption of nitric acid is generally suggested to be above the stoichiometric amount necessary for the production of elemental sulphur.
A reduction in the amount of nitric acid required in the known method is considered important from economic considerations, and such a saving will not only provide an economic advantage, but smaller amounts will necessarily result in smaller amounts of oxides of nitrogen with less need for oxygen to reform the nitric acid, and the loss of gases to the atmosphere could in this case be reduced.
Although rhenium has been recovered from flue gases from molybdenite roasting simultaneously with the recovery of a calcined molybdenum oxide product, no successful wet process is known for the simultaneous recovery of molybdenum and rhenium from molybdenite in significant quantities. As far as is known, there are no oxidizing leaching processes that use nitric acid for the recovery of both molybdenum and rhenium from sulphide ores.
I tillegg må denne prosess utføres i flere trinn. Norwegian patent no. 33720 describes a method in which molybdenum compounds are decomposed with an amount of nitric acid that is less than the theoretical amount that is necessary for complete decomposition of the raw material. However, the oxidation process is incomplete, and a certain amount of molybdenum compounds remains in the residue at the end of the process. In addition, this process must be carried out in several steps. The regeneration of nitric acid from the nitrous gases is only described as an eventual feature.
Norwegian patent no. 126774 describes the oxidation of nickel sulphide ores with nitric acid. The nitrous vapors produced during the reaction are converted to nitric acid by introducing air into a separate reactor and the nitric acid is recycled. However, the use of a separate reactor for the regeneration of the nitric acid is not particularly efficient. In addition, relatively large amounts of nitric acid are required to carry out the oxidation.
US Patent No. 1,508,561 describes the reaction of sulphide ores with nitric acid at elevated temperatures and at atmospheric pressure to form oxides of nitrogen. These oxides are converted back to nitric acid which is then reacted with more sulphide ore. Some of these oxides are converted back to nitric acid in the reaction zone, but the rest are reacted in a separate absorption apparatus.
The object of the present invention is to produce an efficient and economical process for leaching sulphide ores.
This object is achieved according to the invention by the fact that the gas phase in the reaction zone is continuously circulated through the liquid phase in the reaction zone, that all oxides of nitrogen that occur are kept within the reaction zone, and that the reaction is carried out in a pressure vessel under an overpressure that occurs due to the reaction and due to of supplied oxygen.
Only very small amounts of the theoretical amount of nitric acid are necessary to carry out complete leaching of the metal sulphide in a single treatment step in the pressure vessel. Thus, a significant cost saving is achieved, both due to the fact that such small amounts of nitric acid are required and due to the fact that no additional process equipment is required to regenerate nitric acid.
The regeneration of nitric acid in the reaction zone is facilitated by recirculation of the gas phase through the liquid phase. This recycling also provides an effective leaching of the metal sulphide.
The method according to the invention can generally be carried out using an initial amount of nitric acid which is less than one-tenth and often less than one-sixteenth of the stoichiometric amount of nitric acid which is theoretically necessary to effect the desired oxidation. This theoretical stoichiometric amount of nitric acid required to oxidize the sulfides present is calculated on the basis of the sulfides of the metals recovered.
Med molybden beregnes f.eks. den støkiometriske mengde ifølge ligningen: The method according to the invention usually requires about 10-25 g of nitric acid per liters of a slurry of the sulphide in contrast to the known method which requires around 100 g/l. The amount of nitric acid required is usually about one-sixteenth of the theoretical stoichiometric amount required for reaction in the oxidative leaching step, usually to form metal sulfates or oxides. With molybdenum, e.g. the stoichiometric amount according to the equation:
Fremgangsmåten ifølge oppfinnelsen er funnet med fordel The method according to the invention has been found to be advantageous
Prosessen kan gjennomføres innen akseptable områder for temperatur og oksygentrykk. to be able to be carried out in an autoclave to prevent escape of gases and to enable efficient regulation of pressure and temperature. The process can be carried out within acceptable ranges for temperature and oxygen pressure.
The method according to the invention shall be explained in more detail with reference to the accompanying drawing which shows a section through a pressure vessel or an autoclave which can be used to carry out the method.
Et avtappingsrør 22 i bunnen av beholderen er utstyrt med en ventil A pressure vessel or autoclave with a wall 10 is equipped with a cooling jacket 12. The upper part of the pressure vessel or autoclave has a neck part 14 with a circular flange 16 which defines an opening for the container, and the opening is closed by the lid 18 which is fixed to the flange 16 by means of bolts and nuts 20. A drain pipe 22 in the bottom of the container is equipped with a valve
The container is mounted on legs 25. A neck 28 with a flange 30 with a lid 32 attached to it by means of bolts and nuts 32 is placed in the lid 18 of the container. A rotatable mechanical seal 36 is mounted in the lid 32, and a turbine sleeve 38 extends into the container from the underside of the lid 32 and is integral therewith. The sleeve 38 has gas intake openings 40 on opposite sides. The end of the sleeve 38 nearest the bottom of the container terminates in a flat circular flange 42 with slurry intake ports 44. A motor 46 is mounted on the lid 32 for operating the turbine shaft 48 and turbine blades 50.
Beholderlokket 18 har et materør 52 med en ventil 54. The container lid 18 has a feed pipe 52 with a valve 54.
En temperaturfaller (f.eks. et termopar) 68 for registrering av temperaturen i en væske i beholderen og en temperaturmåler 70 A manometer 56 is placed on the lid 18 for measuring the internal pressure in the container. To remove heat from the upper part or dome of the reactor, cooling coils 60 are placed in the dome part with intake 62 and discharge 64 extending through the upper wall of the vessel. Optionally, corresponding windings 60' are shown schematically at the bottom of the container to remove heat from a slurry in the container, here with intake and discharge pipes (not shown) through the container wall as is the case with the windings 60. A temperature drop (e.g. a thermocouple ) 68 for recording the temperature of a liquid in the container and a temperature gauge 70
Et oksygentilmatningsrør 72 og en ventil 74 er anbrakt på toppen av beholderen. for recording the temperature in the gas phase in the container is mounted in the container wall as shown, where the former extends down into the slurry area and the latter extends into the vapor area. An oxygen supply pipe 72 and a valve 74 are located on top of the container.
In use, an aqueous slurry of finely ground ore concentrate is supplied to the bottom of the vessel to a level well above the level of the turbine blades 50. Nitric acid is supplied through the feed pipe 52, and oxygen gas is supplied through the inlet 72. The turbine blades 50 are rotated to draw slurry through the inlet ports 44 to create a reduced pressure in the sleeve 38 which brings gas through the intake mouths 40 and into the slurry where the gas can be thoroughly mixed with it.
During operation, the temperatures in the liquid and gas phase reaction zones are carefully monitored using the sensors 68 and 70. The pressure is also monitored using the pressure gauge 56 to maintain favorable conditions for the conversion of gaseous oxides of nitrogen to nitrogen dioxide which then reacts with the water in the container for to regenerate or reform nitric acid. No gaseous oxides of nitrogen are allowed to escape from the pressure vessel during operation.
During the reaction period, a cooling liquid is circulated through the windings 60 and 60', as this is necessary to maintain the desired temperature. Other cooling devices to remove heat from the reaction zone can be used in addition or instead. The use of cooling coils is usually an effective means of removing heat from the exothermic oxidation of oxides of nitrogen to nitrogen dioxide to regulate the temperature in the reactor, including the temperature in the gas phase reaction zone. The sleeve 38 with gas inlets 40, flange 42 and slurry inlets 44, and the position of the turbine blades 50 with regard to these, are positioned to produce uniform mixing of the gas phase with the slurry and a uniform temperature distribution between the gas phase and the slurry when the turbine blades 59 are rotated.
It is usually found necessary to remove the heat of reaction from the pressure vessel in order to regulate the temperature of the reaction mixture during the reaction. By regulation by means of the removal of heat generated during the reaction, excessive pressure build-up can be prevented, a pressure build-up which may possibly hinder the supply of oxygen. The net effect of heat removal is usually that more oxygen can be made available for the oxidation of the oxides of nitrogen to nitrogen dioxide, the oxidation of certain metals to insoluble oxides and others to sulfates. Experiments have shown that large temperature differentials can occur between the gases in the dome (gas phase reaction zone) and the slurry at the bottom of the reactor without good mixing during the reaction, and where the temperature in the slurry is usually much lower than that in the gas phase, as the usually higher temperature in the dome gases is due to the exothermic oxidation of gaseous oxides of nitrogen to nitrogen dioxide.
When the reaction is finished, the contents of the pressure reactor are released, and the solids and liquids can be separated by methods known per se, such as filtration or other means.
When oxidizing molybdenite using the method outlined above, molybdenum is usually dissolved during the oxidative leaching, and the residue can usually be removed as an insoluble hydrated molybdenum oxide, which can usually be calcined to an oxide with a high degree of purity. The degree of conversion of molybdenum into an insoluble compound and hence the amount that can be recovered from the leaching can usually be regulated. An extraction step or a second leaching step accompanied by neutralization of the sulfuric acid, as in the known process, is usually necessary to recover the molybdenum from the solution, and an extraction step is usually necessary to recover the rhenium from the oxidative leaching solution. It is an advantage, and it can result in a reduction of the amount of nitric acid required, that the molybdenum in solution can be recovered in an extraction step used to recover rhenium.
The nitric acid used in the method according to the invention can e.g. supplied as aqueous nitric acid, as a nitrate or by adding oxides of nitrogen which are then oxidized to nitric acid. Oxygen is usually added to the reaction zone under pressure as needed.
The metal sulphide, e.g. a molybdenite concentrate, will usually be supplied to the reaction zone as an aqueous slurry. The use of a slurry is usually an advantage compared to the currently proposed roasting processes which require drying of the concentrate before roasting. After the wet slurry has been added to the reactor, if necessary, more water can be added. The slurry can e.g. contain as much as up to 25% by weight solids. It has been found suitable to use a solids content of from 25-300 g/l.
The particle size of the metal sulphide treated by the method according to the invention should be small in order to produce the largest possible contact surface area.
10-25 g/l oppslemming. Nitric acid or a source of nitric acid is usually used in an amount of e.g. from 0.037-0.37 kg nitric acid per kg of molybdenum in the reactor, e.g. depending on the purity of the concentrate used. Nitric acid is usually added in amounts e.g. of up to around 30 g/l, e.g. 10-25 g/l slurry.
A small amount of sulfuric acid may, if desired, be added to the reaction mixture when certain metal sulfides are treated to aid initiation of the reaction, although this is usually unnecessary.
The temperature of the slurry containing nitric acid is raised to about 100°C or about 150°C before a source of oxygen is added to the reaction mixture. Oxygen can be supplied to the reactor under different pressures, and a pressure of 11.6 kg/cm<2> above the pressure in the reaction zone has been found appropriate and is used in several of the examples given below. Oxygen-containing gases can also be used as an oxygen source. The temperature is then usually raised to around 180-190°C, where the reaction progresses. The process can usually be carried out at a temperature e.g. from about 150-250°C with a preferred temperature range above about 180°C. Such temperatures usually accelerate the oxidation of sulfur to sulfuric acid and prevent accumulation of formed sulfur with the remaining sulfide, which could prevent the remaining sulfide from coming into contact with the other reactants. After starting the reaction, the temperature rises due to the heat from the exothermic reaction, and the temperature can be regulated by removing heat, e.g. using cooling coils.
The pH value in the slurry decreases as the reaction progresses due to the formation of sulfuric acid, from the value given by the addition of e.g. 5 g/l nitric acid at the start of the reaction to that which arises from the formation of sulfuric acid from sulfur in the system. This amount of sulfuric acid may possibly exceed as much as 300 g/l or even 600 g/l. The sulfuric acid formed by the process can be sold without treatment of the leaching solution or it can be easily purified before sale.
It has surprisingly been shown that the high reaction temperatures in the presence of sulfuric acid which is formed and in the presence of the initially added small amount of nitric acid strongly suppresses the dissolution of iron in the form of iron (III) sulphate. The main amount of iron present in the charge to the reactor can be recovered as iron (III) oxide after the reaction. This ability to keep iron out of solution has been found to be advantageous, especially when the sulfide charged to the reactor contains significant amounts of iron sulfide.
The described method is a one-step process that usually goes completely, e.g. in a pressure vessel or an autoclave. No gaseous oxides of nitrogen are allowed to escape, and these can be used for re-conversion to nitric acid. The fact that less than one-sixteenth of the theoretical stoichiometric amount of nitric acid is usually required for complete conversion of the sulfide confirms that nitric acid is efficiently regenerated.
The oxidative leaching reaction gives oxides of nitrogen in which nitrogen has a lower valence state than in nitric acid. The oxides are volatile, and they are present in the reactor top. The oxygen present in the reactor oxidizes the nitrogen oxides to nitrogen dioxide which reacts with water to form nitric acid, and the reaction proceeds as at the beginning. The oxidation of the oxides of nitrogen occurs simultaneously with the oxidation of the sulphide, and the sulphide oxidation reaction is usually completed within a period of no more than about 1 hour.
Pressures of up to 18.6 kg/cm 2 can be generated in the reaction zone, and the reaction is usually allowed to proceed at a preferred pressure of from about 11.6-18.6 kg/cm 2 . The oxygen pressure necessary to feed oxygen to the reaction is determined by the internal vapor pressure formed by heating the aqueous slurry, but it should be kept e.g. of around 1.76 kg/cm 2 above the working pressure in the reaction zone. Very little elemental sulfur is usually produced. Most metals are oxidized to their sulfates under the reaction conditions, but some metals, such as antimony and molybdenum, are usually oxidized to soluble oxides, and. these can be recycled, e.g. from the residue after filtering off the soluble metal sulphates. Lead sulphides are converted into insoluble lead sulphate which can be recovered as such. This can produce an efficient method for separating lead and zinc in a lead-zinc sulphide concentrate. For the purpose of the present invention, it is usually immaterial whether the metal is recovered as a soluble sulfate or as an insoluble compound. Metals can be recovered from the soluble sulphates using known methods such as electrolysis, precipitation, cementation and ion exchange.
The reaction time is an important economic consideration, and metal recovery of over 95% has been achieved under the above stated reaction conditions within 15-60 minutes.
The method according to the invention can be used for oxidation of various metal sulphides. Although the application to the oxidation of molybdenum and rhenium-containing sulphides is generally preferred, the method can be used on sulphides of other metals, e.g. from groups Ib, Hb, IVb, Va, Via, Vila and VIII of the periodic table (as defined in "General and Inorganic Chemistry for University Students", Macmillan and Co. Ltd., London, 1958). Examples of metal sulphides which can be oxidized using the method include sulphides of copper, silver, gold, zinc, cadmium, mercury, lead, tin, arsenic, antimony, bismuth, molybdenum, rhenium, cobalt and nickel.
The following examples are given to illustrate the invention. Percentages of various metals given in the examples are calculated on the total amount of metal present. Everything is stated in % by weight unless otherwise indicated.
Eksempel 1 Example 1
The purpose of this example is to illustrate the conversion of M0S2 to MoO^ using nitric acid oxidation of molybdenite in a method according to the invention.
400 g molybdenittkonsentrat (med følgende omtrentlige vektprosentuale sammensetninger: Mo 53-56,5%, Re 0,081-0,089%, 400 g of molybdenite concentrate (with the following approximate weight percentage compositions: Mo 53-56.5%, Re 0.081-0.089%,
Cu 1.05-1.15% and Fe 1.33-1.45%) was transferred to a pressure autoclave reactor to which 25 g of nitric acid and 1 liter of water were added. The reactor was sealed and heated to 125°C at which temperature oxygen was added to maintain a pressure of 11.6 kg/cm 2 . The temperature reached a maximum of 170°C. The oxidation of molybdenite was essentially complete within 1-2 hours and was total within 4 hours. The results obtained are shown in table 1.
The results show an almost 100% conversion of MoS2 to MoO^ using nitric acid.
Eksempel 2 Example 2
The purpose of this example is to determine the range of nitric acid required to dissolve rhenium in the molybdenite that was used in ex. 1, and to oxidize the tetravalent molybdenum in the molybdenite to the hexavalent insoluble oxide form.
Different amounts of nitric acid were added in separate trials to a pressure autoclave containing 100 g of molybdenite concentrate and 1 liter of water. The contents of the autoclave were reacted for 1 hour at 125-170°C and under a pressure of 11.6 kg/cm<2>.
Etter reaksjonen ble innholdet i autoklaven filtrert After the reaction, the contents of the autoclave were filtered

den ikke-omsatt sulfidmateriale. Resultatene er angitt i tabell 2. the unreacted sulphide material. The results are shown in table 2.
These results suggest that about 0.037% by weight of nitric acid, based on molybdenum, was required to initiate the ox-sydase ion reaction, and that using 0.371% by weight of nitric acid essentially total conversion of M0S2 to MoO3 was achieved.
Eksempel 3 Example 3
The purpose of this example is to determine the effect of sulfuric acid with a view to bringing rhenium, molybdenum and copper into solution during the oxidation of the molybdenite concentrate that was used in ex. 1, and the action of the sulfuric acid on the conversion of M0S2 to M0O3.
2. Resultatene er angitt i tabell 3. Sulfuric acid was added in measured amounts to the concentrate as needed to regulate the sulfuric acid concentration. 0.21 kg of nitric acid was used per kg molybdenum. A series of experiments was carried out under conditions corresponding to those in ex. 2. The results are shown in table 3.
The data given in Table 3 suggest that the presence of sulfuric acid up to a concentration of 400 g/l has very little effect on the conversion of M0S2 in molybdenite to M0O3. The presence of sulfuric acid has little or no effect with respect to
bringe rhenium i oppløsning og kun en liten virkning med henblikk s^ på å bringe molybden i oppløsning. bring rhenium into solution and only a small effect with respect to bringing molybdenum into solution.
Eksempel 4 Example 4
The purpose of this example is to determine the effect of the oxygen overpressure on the oxidation of M0S2 to Mo0.j in a narrow temperature range using the molybdenite from e.g. 1. Different oxygen overpressures were used. The temperature was varied between 100 and 110°C. The amount of nitric acid used was 0.28 kg/kg of molybdenum (IV) to be oxidized, and the reaction was carried out for 1 hour. The results are shown in table 4.
The results in table 4 suggest that an oxygen overpressure at an operating temperature of 100-110°C has no major effect on the degree of oxidation of molybdenite. A slight reduction in conversion rate can be noted with increasing oxygen overpressure.
Eksempel 5 Example 5
To determine the effect of temperature on the molybdenite oxidation, three tests were carried out on 100 g samples of the molybdenite concentrate from e.g. 1. The nitric acid added to each system was 0.28 kg/kg molybdenum(IV) to be oxidized. A pressure of about 11.6 kg/cm 2 was used in each experiment. The reaction time at a given temperature was 1 hour in each case. The results are shown in table 5.
The results in table 5 suggest that the change in temperature affected the degree of reaction with a large increase in the reaction rate between a temperature of between 105 and 125°C.

This experiment was carried out to investigate the effect of carrying out a method according to the invention on a pilot plant scale.
A 375 liter autoclave reactor was charged with 37.65 kg of molybdenite concentrate from ex. 1, which effectively contained 30.50 kg MoO^, and approx. 190 1 water. The rhenium content was 0.06% (22.6 g). The temperature in the slurry was raised to 155°C, and 1.0 kg of nitric acid was added. Sufficient oxygen was added eventually to maintain the pressure at 10.9 kg/cm 2 . Further amounts of 0.5 kg nitric acid were added after 20, 40, 60 and 68 min of the reaction time. Oxygen was fed to the system until ■ the reaction was complete, indicated by the oxygen consumption being negligible after 2 hours. The temperature measured at the top of the reactor did not exceed 193°C. The slurry was cooled to 93°C, at which temperature the reactor contents were discharged. Analysis of the solid and liquid phase suggested that 99.8% molybdenum-(IV) was oxidized to Mo(VI).
Analysis of the liquid phase after the oxidation showed the presence of 24.5 g/l Mo and 0.118 g/l Re. The H^SO^ concentration, determined by base titration against phenolphthalein, was 247 g/l.
The solution was fed to a continuous solution extraction circuit where molybdenum and rhenium were separated from most of the sulfuric acid and metallic cations such as iron, copper and zinc. An aqueous solution of ammonia (5-N) was used to strip the metal from the solvent, and this gave a solution containing 192 g/l Mo and 0.855 g/l Re. The extraction solvent used consisted of 5% "Alamine 336" (a trialkylamine containing a mixture of Cg-

Rheniumoppløsningen ble ytterligere renset ved vanlige teknikker, og det ble oppnådd et ammoniumperr-henatprodukt med en renhet på 99,9%. and C1Q alkyl groups with a molecular weight of 392) and 95% "Cyclosol 53" (an aromatic hydrocarbon with a flash point of 47.2 C) as diluent. The purified solution was further contacted with a solvent containing 5% of a quaternary ammonium compound ("Aliquat 336") in 95% "Cyclosol 53" as a diluent to separate the rhenium from the molybdenum. The raffinate solution containing molybdenum was fed to a spray dryer and 6.9 kg of MoO 3 , or 22.6% of the molybdenum fed to the autoclave reactor, was obtained. The solvent was stripped of rhenium using 1M perchloric acid, yielding a purified rhenium solution containing 97% of the rhenium, or 21.9 g of Re, in the perchloric acid solution. The rhenium solution was further purified by conventional techniques and an ammonium perhenate product with a purity of 99.9% was obtained.

23,0 kg MoO^ ble gjenvunnet under dette trinn i prosessen, noe som ga totalt 29,9 kg MoO^ som var gjenvunnet ved oksydasjon og opplsønings-ekstraksjonstrinnene. from the reaction mixture was leached with an ammonia solution to dissolve molybdenum as ammonium molybdate. The ammonia-soluble substance was filtered and the ammonium molybdate solution spray-dried, and a high-purity molybdenum trioxide was obtained. If desired, ammonium molybdate could be made. 23.0 kg of MoO₂ was recovered during this step of the process, giving a total of 29.9 kg of MoO₂ recovered by the oxidation and dissolution extraction steps.

Examples 7 and 8 in table 6 were carried out using methods according to the invention, and examples 9 and 10 are comparative examples which were carried out without the use of nitric acid.
Examples 7 and 8 gave quantitative recovery of copper under reaction conditions that used only nitric acid. The amount of nitric acid used was less than one-sixteenth of the theoretical stoichiometric amount required for the reaction. Examples 9 and 10, in which nitric acid was not used, gave very poor copper yields. Example 9 shows that the addition of sulfuric acid alone has very little effect on the copper yield.
The metal sulphide mineral used in the four examples in Table 7 was a zinc sulphide concentrate containing 56.8% zinc and 5.7% iron. Methods according to the invention were used in examples 11 and 12, while examples 13 and 14 were carried out without the use of nitric acid.
As can be seen from the table, high yields of zinc were obtained in examples 11 and 12, which used small amounts of nitric acid. The amount of nitric acid required was less than one-sixteenth of the theoretically calculated stoichiometric amount. Examples 13 and 14, without nitric acid, gave very poor yields, and Example 14 showed that sulfuric acid has little effect on the reaction.
Det hadde en analyse på 10,33-10,97% Ni og 0,40% Co. The mineral used in the five examples shown in Table 8 was Pentlandite. It had an assay of 10.33-10.97% Ni and 0.40% Co.
Examples 15, 16 and 17 in table 8 used methods according to the invention, while examples 18 and 19 are comparative examples which were used without the use of nitric acid.
It is noted that high yields of nickel and cobalt (over 98%) were obtained in Examples 15, 16 and 17 using small amounts of nitric acid which were much less than one-sixteenth of the calculated theoretical stoichiometric amount. The yields were considerably reduced in examples 18 and 19, where nitric acid was not used.
The mineral used in the four examples in Table 9 had the following analysis: 26.4% Cu, 16.1% Sb and 5.32% Ag.
Examples 20 and 21 in table 9 were carried out using the method according to the invention, while examples 22 and 23 were carried out without the addition of nitric acid.
A high recovery of both copper and silver was achieved using small amounts of nitric acid in examples 20 and 21, while small yields of copper and practically no silver were obtained in examples 22 and 23 which did not use nitric acid. High yields of antimony were obtained in the residue from Example 20 as Sb 2 O 4 .
Det bemerkes at mengden av oppløselig jern i filtratet It is noted that the amount of soluble iron in the filtrate
Dette viser at oppløseligheten av jern undertrykkes under reaksjonsbetingelsene som ble benyttet i eksemplene 20 og 21 i nærvær av svovelsyre og små mengder salpetersyre. in examples 22 and 23, where nitric acid was not used, was about four times or more the amount that was in the filtrate in examples 20 and 21 where nitric acid was added. This shows that the solubility of iron is suppressed under the reaction conditions used in Examples 20 and 21 in the presence of sulfuric acid and small amounts of nitric acid.
