1394500 Photo-electric distance-measuring COMPAGNIE GENERALE D'ELECTRICITE 29 May 1973 [30 May 1972] 25607/73 Heading H4D Relates to a pulsed laser 1 distance-measuring apparatus utilizing a receiving photo-diode 3. According to the invention the reverse bias voltage (R.B.V.) applied to diode 3 is controlled by a feed-back loop incorporating a detector 8 affording a continuous signal representing the noise output (e.g. the level of the peak of noise pulses) of diode 3 and a device 9 controlling the R.B.V. such that the noise output always equals a reference magnitude; a circuit 10 (e.g. a monostable see Fig. 2 (not shown)) temporarily lowering the R.B.V. in a duration (e.g. less than that corresponding to maximum target range) less than the response time of the feed-back loop; and a threshold device 5 passing only those echo pulses above a predetermined level. Thus the apparatus has a high sensitivity with a low probability of triggering a ranging counter 7 on a noise pulse. The temporary lowering of the R.B.V. may take place at two levels to obviate interference due to e.g. reflexion by a nearby fog bank.
