It is also known to prepare dialkyl esters from phthalic acids directly from aromatic hydrocarbons and alkanols, by treating a xylene in the liquid phase in the presence of an alkanol with oxygen or gases containing this. In the following, the procedure was carried out in such a way that xylene was heated in a pressure vessel in the presence of an oxidation catalyst to approx. 100 to 200° C and at pressures up to 20 atm. passed through the hydrocarbon oxygen or air and methanol together or separately in a quantity per hour of approx. 100 to 200 liters of air and 10 to 1000 g of methanol in vapor form per 1000 g starting xylene. This known method of working is tied to the constant introduction of methanol into the reaction mixture. The introduced and not immediately reacted methanol escapes in vapor form with the unconsumed oxidizing agent and, as a result, reaction water and hydrocarbon components, so that the liquid phase in the reaction vessel does not contain the required amounts of methanol. When transferring this known method of operation to other dialkylbenzenes, it also turns out that the method yields by using dialkylbenzenes other than xylene, e.g. of dialkylbenzenes with alkyl residues with higher C-numbers, such as e.g. isopropyl residues, no or almost no phthalic diesters. A significant disadvantage of this known working method is also that the xylene used for the reaction is for the most part not transferred to the oxidation step for the benzene-dicarboxylic acid and the oxidized and esterified products formed from the hydrocarbon consist to less than 20 percent of substances that correspond to the oxidation step for dicarboxystyrene.
A further method by which significantly better yields are obtained on dialkyl esters of terephthalic acid resp. isophthalic acid and where significantly more of the benzene hydrocarbon serving as starting material is immediately oxidized and esterified until the oxidation step for the benzenedicarboxylic acids is described in the Norwegian patent no. 104 252. This method consists in that a solution of at least one dialkylbenzene which contain substituents in the same position as the desired esters, and in which each of the alkyl groups contains 1 to 4 C atoms, in which up to two of the hydrogen atoms which are bound to any hydrocarbon atom in the alkyl groups may also be replaced by chlorine atoms, in an alkanol with 1 to 4 C atoms, during which the content of the solution of alkanols is at least 60% by weight, advantageously 80-95% by weight, treated with gases containing oxygen, suitably with pure oxygen at temperatures between 120 and 220 ° C and at a pressure of at least 8 atm, in particular 15 to 60 atm.
The present claim relates to an improvement of the method described in the above-mentioned patent with a view to increasing the operational reliability of the method.
It turned out that iso- and terephthalic acid dialkyl esters of lower alkanols with 1 to 4 C atoms are obtained in a simple and reliable way when at least 1 benzene hydrocarbon with two oxidizable side chains in the same position as the desired esters, from the group consisting of dialkylbenzenes with 1 to 4 C atoms in each side chain and chlorine-substituted dialkylbenzenes of the same alkyl chain length, in which, however, at least on 1 C atom at least one alkyl side chain up to two hydrogen atoms is substituted by chlorine, in alkanol solution containing at least 60 — approx. 98% by weight of an alkanol with 1 to 4 C atoms is treated in a reaction zone, which is constantly filled with the liquid to be oxidized and at the same time esterified, with gases containing molecular oxygen at temperatures between 120 and 220° C and a pressure of at least 8 atm, so that even during the entire oxygen treatment no continuous gas phase will form above the liquid.
Suitable starting materials are dialkylbenzenes with 1 to 4 C atoms in each alkyl group, which contain the oxidizable alkyl side chains bound in the m- or p-position. Suitable compounds are e.g. m-xylene, p-ylene, m- or p-diethylbenzene and the corresponding diisobutylbenzenes. Particularly suitable dialkylbenzenes are those in which at least one of the alkyl groups is an isopropyl group. Particular mention should be made here, for example, of 1,3- or 1,4-cymene and, above all, also diisopropylbenzene. Benzene hydrocarbons in which at least one C atom is substituted in one or both alkyl groups or with one or two chlorine atoms are also suitable starting materials. Oxidizable side chains are therefore also chlorine-substituted alkyl groups with 1 to 4 C atoms, especially mono- or dichloro-substituted alkyl groups, where it is indifferent on which of the C atoms the chlorine has entered the alkyl radical. Suitable chlorine-substituted dialkylbenzenes are, for example, m- and p-xylene chloride, xylene dichloride, xylylidene dichloride, p-chloromethylcumene, m-chloromethylcumene, 1,3- and 1,4-chloroethylcumene and 1,4-bis-(chloroethyl)-benzene.
The mentioned benzene derivatives with 1,3- and 1,4-position oxidizable side chains can also be used in admixture with each other and/or in admixture with other benzene hydrocarbons. For example, technical xylenes can be used as starting materials, which contain approx. 50 to 80% by weight m- and p-xylene, approx. 10 to 40 percent by weight o-xylene and up to approx. 10% by weight diethylbenzene.
For oxidation and simultaneous esterification of the benzenedicarboxylic acids that occur intermediately during the oxidation, the starting benzene hydrocarbons dissolved in alkanols are used. Lower alcohols with up to 4 C atoms such as methanol, ethanol, propanol, butanol, isopropanol, isobutanol and tertiary butanol come into consideration as alkanols. The particularly preferred solvent is methanol. The solvent is used for the preparation of the solutions in such an amount that the finished starting solutions contain at least 60% by weight of alkanol. The amount of 60% by weight is certainly critical, as otherwise the yields of benzenedicarboxylic acid esters fall sharply. Using solutions containing more than 98 percent by weight of methanol is obviously inappropriate as a method, as it can no longer be carried out in a sufficiently economical manner. It is advantageous to work with solutions containing 60 to 95 percent by weight, suitably 80 to 95 percent by weight, alkanol.
As an oxidizing agent, pure oxygen or gas mixtures containing oxygen, which have a high content of oxygen, e.g. 50% by volume calculated on the mixture and more. Air or other oxygen-containing mixtures with a lower oxygen content can be used.
The oxidation is already successful without the presence of reaction-accelerating substances. However, it is appropriate to co-use catalysts. As such, they are suitable for air oxidation of alkylbenzenes in per se known catalysts. Particular mention should be made, for example, of soluble salts of manganese, cobalt or vanadium. For example, mention should be made of the salts of these metals of fatty acids such as acetic acid, butyric acid or ethylhexanoic acid, of unsaturated acids particularly for the oleic acid series, e.g. crotonic or oleic acid, or nathenic acids. For the oxidation, the salts or mixtures thereof are suitably used in amounts of 0.1 to 5% by weight, calculated on the total amount of the starting solution to be oxidized. In addition to the catalysts, additional substances can be used which promote the reaction, e.g. bromides, such as alkali metal bromides, in particular potassium or ammonium bromide, or heavy metal bromides such as manganese, cobalt or nickel bromide, in which the quantity of the additives which have a promoting effect is of the same order of magnitude as the co-used catalysts.
The oxidation takes place in the liquid phase at temperatures from 120 to 220° C, advantageously approx. 140 to 200° C. The pressures must be so high that below the selected working temperatures the alcohol used is also present in a liquid state. The minimum pressure changes to 8 atm. In general, you work at a pressure of 15 atm. until approx. 300 atm, advantageous at approx. 15 to 60 atm. If desired, you can also work at even higher pressure, e.g. up to 500 atm. The high pressures of e.g. 100 to 300 atm. is particularly appropriate and can be advantageously used when you want to work at relatively low working temperatures and thereby achieve the resulting better, i.e. greater oxygen absorption in the liquid phase and a rapid and, above all, extensive turnover of the starting hydrocarbon.
The carrying out of the oxidation is carried out in a pressure-proof closed reaction vessel which is filled with the alcoholic starting solution in the manner known per se, when working in the liquid phase. The procedure can be carried out on a case-by-case basis or advantageously also in continuous operation. For example, one can proceed in such a way that in a pressure-proof vessel, so much of the alkanol solution is filled that the dialkylbenzene and the catalyst, until the vessel is so full that the remaining still empty space is completely occupied by the liquid as a result of the liquid expanding during heating to the turnover temperature during expulsion of the air, e.g. through a valve. (The cubic expansion coefficients of the solution components are known below).
After heating to the desired reaction temperature, the introduction of the oxygen or gases containing it, at a pressure of at least 8 atm, suitably approx. 15 to 300 atm. You can also fill the vessel completely with liquid before heating and allow the excess liquid to flow away during heating through the overflow valve at the upper end of the vessel. That of the liquid during the introduction of the oxygen or gases that contain this, not consumed oxygen or the exhaust gases and the resulting vapors are allowed to escape through a pressure valve. Advantageously, before the complete depressurization, the solvent vapors can be condensed from the exhaust gases by means of cooling. To replace the loss of the liquid through evaporation, a new starting solution is continuously introduced into the vessel.
You can also proceed in such a way that you fill a pressure vessel to approximately 3/4 of the room content, the vessel is slowly heated, the starting solution is continuously impressed into the vessel in such quantities that the average residence time of the liquid in the vessel varies from 1/2 to 6 hours, advantageously 2 to 3 hours and as soon as the liquid escapes from the vessel via an overflow valve, the introduction of the oxidizing gases containing molecular oxygen is started. The exhaust gases can be carried away together with the liquid through the overflow valve, the liquid is separated from the gases and vapors, e.g. in a separator, and from the exhaust gases are recovered, suitably before the complete release of the pressure, entrained solvent vapors by condensation.
After cooling and release of the pressure, the preparation of the reaction solution takes place according to methods known per se, e.g. by filtration and distillation. Recovered starting materials and oxidation intermediates, e.g. tolyl acid alkyl esters, diacetylbenzene, acetylbenzoic acid alkyl ester, p- or m-bis-(2)-hydro-xoisopropyl)-benzene, aldehyde benzoic acid ester and tolylaldehyde, are added back to the starting solution, or further oxidized separately, appropriately after separation of the water still contained in the reaction solution and formed during the oxidation and the as distillation residue remaining dark colored resins.
By working without a gas space above the liquid in the oxidation zone, it is achieved that the reliability of operation during the carrying out of the oxidation and the simultaneous esterification is increased to a significant extent, as spontaneous uncontrollable gas reactions are excluded with certainty.
The obtained iso- or terephthalic acid esters are largely pure and can optionally be processed without further ado after recrystallization and/or vacuum distillation, e.g. for polyesters.
The parts given in the examples are, unless otherwise stated, parts by weight. Parts by weight and parts by volume are here in the ratio grams to liters.
Eksempel 1 Example 1
In a tubular upright pressure pipe with 10 volume parts volume content, which is at least equipped with a stirrer and at the lower end with two supply lines and at the upper end with a removal line, in which an overflow valve is built in near the end of the pipe, 6400 parts of methanol, 1600 parts of p-diisopropylbenzene, 10 parts of manganese acetate and 10 parts of cobalt bromide are added. The pressure pipe is also surrounded by a jacket pipe through which boiling water flows under a pressure of approx. 7 atm. The overflow valve is set to 60 atm. Print. After the vessel has been heated to 165° C, pressure is pressed into the vessel through one of the supply lines per hour 1000 parts by volume of oxygen (measured under normal conditions), while at the same time through the other supply line per hour, a solution of 2,600 parts of methanol, 650 parts of p-diisopropylbenzene, 4 parts of manganese acetate and 4 parts of cobalt bromide and the intermediate oxidation products indicated further below. Through the overflow valve, in addition to the oxidation gases, which are freed from volatile solvent vapors by means of an after-connected cooler, 3,600 parts of reaction liquid escape. The removed reaction liquid is heated in a distillation kettle with a column attachment and dephlegmator to 240° C. Blow into the liquid per hour 400 parts to 240° C superheated methanol steam.
While the catalyst dissolved in the reaction liquid remains in the boiler of the distillation column as well as non-volatile impurities, which are suitably removed from time to time, the terephthalic acid dimethyl ester is recovered from the methanolic distillate after cooling by filtration. The mother liquor is distilled during which, using a fractionation column, after separating a small stream of methyl formate and formaldehyde dimethyl acetal, the methanol is recovered anhydrously. The oxidation water and the intermediate oxidation products such as diacetylbenzene, acetylbenzoic acid methyl ester, diisopropanolbenzene and isopropylisopropanolbenzene return to the sump of the column. The latter is separated from the water by phase separation. The recovered methanol is used again for the production of new di-isopropylbenzene solutions, during which the prepared solution, in addition to the catalyst, is also added to the intermediate oxidation products that are obtained every hour.
After a few hours, the equilibrium has settled in such a way that per hour on average you get approx. 600 to 650 parts terephthalic acid dimethyl ester and approx. 150 to 200 parts oxidation intermediates. The yield of terephthalic acid dimethyl ester varies with a turnover of 1.5 kg of dimethyl terephthalate per liters of reaction volume and day to 80 percent of the theory.

This solution is filled in a pressure vessel with a volume of 3 volumes and which is equipped with a stirrer inside and at the lower end with 2 supply lines and at the upper end with a removal line, and in which an overflow valve is built in near the upper end. The pressure vessel is externally surrounded by a cooling jacket through which boiling water flows under a pressure of 4.5 atm. The overflow valve is set to 15 atm. Print. After the vessel, filled to the brim with liquid, has been heated to 150° C, pressure is pressed into the vessel through one of the supply lines per hour 250 parts by volume of oxygen (measured under normal conditions), while at the same time through the other supply line per hour impressions 252 parts of the resolution stated above. Through the overflow valve, in addition to the oxidation gases, which are freed of volatile solvent vapors by means of an after-connected cooler, the reaction liquid also escapes. It is heated in a still with a column head and dephlegmator to 240° C, during which 1000 parts of superheated methanol steam is simultaneously blown in at 240° C. Further processing takes place in the manner indicated in example 1. Here too, in addition to the terephthalic acid dimethyl ester, intermediate oxidation products are also obtained by adding the above-mentioned fresh solution. After a few hours, the equilibrium has settled in such a way that per hour in medium, 180 to 190 parts of terephthalic acid dimethyl ester and 40 to 50 parts of oxidation intermediates are obtained. The yield of terephthalic acid dimethyl ester changes to approx. 82 percent of the theory.
Eksempel 3 Example 3
A solution is prepared which has the following percentage composition: 94% by weight methanol 5% by weight para-xylene
0,5 vektsprosent manganacetat 0.5% by weight manganese acetate
Av ca. 50 pst.'s- 0.5 weight percent cobalt bromide The solution is filled into the pressure vessel described in example 2 and proceeded in the manner indicated there with the following exceptions: In the cooling jacket of the pressure vessel, the cooling water vapor pressure is set to 13 atm. so that a temperature of approx. 190° C. The over-flow valve is set to 270 atm. The per hour dosed amount of liquid is set to 3 parts of the above-mentioned solution, which corresponds to an amount of 120 parts p-xylene per hour. Of approx. 50 percent
mengden surstoff (resten består av nitro-gen) inngasser man pr. time 180 volumdeler (målt ved normalbetingelser). the amount of oxygen (the rest consists of nitrogen) is inhaled per hour 180 volume parts (measured under normal conditions).
The preparation of the reaction result takes place in the manner indicated in the preceding examples. After the recovery of the intermediate oxidation products, which in this case mainly consist of p-tolylic acid ester, a quantity of terephthalic acid dimethyl ester is established per hour which moves between 190 and 200 parts, which corresponds to a yield of approx. 90 percent of the theory.
