Description
For avtrykk mottagelig, sensitivert papirark For impression receptive, sensitized paper sheet
The present invention relates to a sensitized, impressionable sheet for use with essentially colorless or weakly colored chromogenic printing inks, which develop a strong distinct color due to a chemical reaction when placed on the receiving sheet, as well as a method for producing said sheet.
Sensitized copy receiver sheets for use in such copying systems have largely been associated with the use of acid clay particles which provide a large sensitized surface for the chromogenic ink, which is isolated from the clay by means of a pressure-rupturing matrix and which may burst locally by pressure.effected by writing or typing so as to release the chromogenic material and cause the color-forming reaction on the copy receiver sheet in the areas corresponding to the patterns formed by the writing.
In preferred embodiments of such copying systems, the chromogenic printing ink, usually a leuco dye base, is isolated in pressure-rupturable microcapsules which are either coated on a separate "transfer sheet" to form a "coupled" system, or on the clay itself -sensitized receiving sheets to form a "stand-alone" copy sheet. In recent times, the acidic clay has been replaced in whole or in part with an acidic polymer material, preferably a phenolic polymer material.
The copy receiver sheet according to the present invention is sensitized with an acid-reactive polymer material, but the sensitizing layer, which is in the form of a submerged layer between the front and back sides of the sheet, has, in contrast to the polymer coating on the previously known paper types, a more or less discontinuous structure that forms an individual coating for each fiber and extends like a broken arc-shaped chain from fiber to fiber so that the natural absorption properties of paper for applied printing ink are not hindered or rendered ineffective, but so that the large surface naturally provided by a hair structure is preserved.
According to the present invention, there is thus provided an impression-receptive sensitized paper sheet for use in copying systems in combination with isolated, colorless, chromogenic materials, which assume color in contact with an acid-reactive polymer material carried by the impression-receptive sheet, characterized in that the polymer material, such as is a phenolic polymer, is present in the paper web in the form of a layer close to the paper surface and covers the individual fibers without filling the space between the individual fibers.
According to the invention, a method for producing such a sheet is also provided and this method is characterized by the fact that a solution with low viscosity and low concentration of the acid-reactive polymer material is applied to the surface of a paper substrate to form a discontinuous polymer coating on it, which merely covering the surface fibers of the substrate, and after which at least one solvent for the polymeric material is applied to said surface in an amount which will not saturate the paper web so as to form a solution of the polymeric material which moves into the paper to a level near but below said surface, and in that said solvent is then allowed to dry to thus leave a discontinuous, submerged layer of the polymer material.
Fig. 2 er et tverrsnitt av mottagerarket før belegget er drevet ned i papiret, og Various embodiments of the invention will now be described with reference to the drawings where: Fig. 1 is a schematic drawing of a flexographic printing unit which is suitable for applying the sensitizing coating to the surface of the receiving sheet and for printing the coating into the paper body. Fig. 2 is a cross-section of the receiving sheet before the coating has been driven down into the paper, and
fig 3 til 6 er forstørrede papirfibre som er omsluttet av Figs 3 to 6 are enlarged paper fibers enclosed by
et dekke av polymermateriale. a cover of polymeric material.
The significance of the present invention lies in the provision of the phenolic polymer material in a given area in such a structure that a small part of it provides a large contact surface with applied chromogenic printing ink that penetrates into the receiving sheet, so that the reaction can take place quickly and vigorously for the small amount of materials used per unit area. In such a paper sensitized with phenolic polymer material, a color reaction can be effected due to the material's acidic properties which are more accessible if the phenolic material is dissolved by the applied chromogenic ink. Rapid dissolution is desirable and large contact surfaces per unit area of the surface sheet are a prerequisite for rapid and intense reaction.
The used solution of sensitizing material has a viscosity somewhat less than the viscosity of water and the applied coating is present in such a quantity and concentration and with such a degree of volatility of the solvent that the solvent, as soon as it is applied as a coating, evaporates and leaves an almost undetectable residue, which is then driven into the paper body to form a submerged layer between the recto and verso surfaces of the sheet.
Among the ways in which the coating solution can be applied, mention can be made of spraying, light showering, coating with a knife, light brushing or any other method where regulated quantities can be applied.
The preferred method by which the coating solution can be applied to the paper is by rubber printing surfaces with an intermediate feed roller and a feed roller which is dipped into a container containing the solution. The solution is applied to a continuously running paper, which is then passed over a drying station and wound onto a receiving roller. About 9 g of dry phenolic resin to 272 g per rice paper comprising 500 sheets of a size of 61 x 91.5 cm is sufficient to form marks in a solution of 1.5 weight percent crystal violet lactone dissolved in an inert oil to provide a chromogenic ink. To illustrate this, reference is made to Figure 1, which schematically shows a flexographic printing machine where a sheet of paper is fed through this unit and wound onto a take-up roller. A sensitizing solution is used as indicated in the following example and an amount of sensitizing solution of approx. 900 g per rice paper, which in the dry state gives a dry weight of 9 g to 272 g phenolic resin per rice. The sensitizing solution is held in a container 10 in which a supply roller 11 is rotated, this roller being in contact with an intermediate roller 12 and a pressure roller 12, which is in contact with the paper sheet 14, which is moved in the direction of the arrow. Any suitable device may be used at the drying station 15 to apply heat by conduction by means of a hot body or a hot gas to the coating to enable rapid drying thereof.
Fig. 2 shows a cross-section of a typical paper sheet with fiber hairs 20 individually coated with the dried phenolic material 21, which extends as an arcuate chain between the fibers but does not materially close or fill the capillaries between the fibers. A receiving sheet where only the fiber hairs are coated is partly sensitive to dirt because the fiber hairs protrude above the main structure of the paper and the sheet is thus vulnerable chemically and physically to applied pressure and substances. Accordingly, a liquid solvent is applied to the sheet which dissolves the coating on the surface fibers, e.g. in the form of a coating, which causes the coating on the surface fibers to be driven down into the paper body for a distance determined by the amount of "driving-in" solvent used. The surface fibers are thereby stripped of polymer material and the sheet becomes resistant to dirt.
This reduction of the metered light coating provided by the first applied flexographic print by applying a solvent coating solves the problem of dirt resistance while at the same time preserving the benefits of a light application of the sensitizing material. It has been found that the reduction of the material in the sheet body does not significantly destroy the intensity of the marks that are made on the sheet and this is believed to be due to the fact that for a sheet where only the surface fibers are coated, part of an applied liquid color-reactive printing ink would flow into the paper body and would thus become unusable.
1. Omtrent 45 - 900 g oppløsningsmiddel er tilstrekkelig per ris papir omfattende 500 ark av størrelse 61 x 91.5 cm. Although any of the above-mentioned application methods may, if desired, be used for applying the solvent coating to the acid sensitized paper, the preferred method is by means of rubber printing plates with an intermediate feed roller and a feed roller immersed in a container of the solvent or solvent mixture, and the solvent is applied to a continuously running paper which is then passed over a drying station and wound onto a receiving roll. Such an arrangement can form a second printing station in the flexographic printing device shown in fig. 1. Approximately 45 - 900 g of solvent is sufficient per rice paper comprising 500 sheets of size 61 x 91.5 cm.
Figures 3 to 6 show enlargements of individual fibers which are coated with polymer material, with figure 4 showing unformed chains of polymer material between the fibers.
An example of a particular embodiment consists in dissolving 15% by weight of phenolic resin in a mixture of 25% by weight of ethanol and 55% by weight of ethyl acetate. This mixture is printed on a paper substrate by means of a flexographic printing device equipped with several printing stations so that the successive coatings, first with the phenolic material and then with a solvent mixture, can be made in a single run of the paper web through the press.
The solvent coating consists of equal amounts of ethyl acetate and ethylene glycol monoethyl ether. The finished product exhibits an increased resistance to soiling when reacted with a crystal violet lactone solution to form a colored mark. It should be noted that the solvent used in the second coating is not the same as that used in the first coating, this was done to illustrate how free one is when choosing solvents. With a special paper substrate, solvents individually or as mixtures will have different effects with regard to penetration, dissolving power, evaporation capacity and immiscibility, and the person skilled in the art will therefore have many opportunities to achieve the desired results in terms of penetration depth and porosity in the substrate with a given fiber structure.
The acidic phenolic polymer material which is suitable in the present invention comprises phenolaldehyde polymers, phenolacetylene polymers, maleic acid-rosin resins, fully or partially hydrolyzed styrene-maleic anhydride copolymers and ethylene-maleic anhydride copolymers, carboxypolymethylene and fully or partially hydrolyzed vinyl methyl ether-maleic anhydride copolymers and mixtures thereof.
Blant de fenolpolymerer som er egnet er parafenylfenoler Among the phenolic polymers that are suitable are paraphenylphenols
Blandinger av disse fenolpolymerer kan naturligvis benyttes. and alkylphenol-acetylene resins, which are soluble in common organic solvents and which have a permanent meltability without being treated with cross-linking agents. A special group of suitable phenolaldehyde polymers are compounds of the type commonly called "novolacs" which are characterized by solubility in common organic solvents and which, in the absence of cross-linking agents, are permanently fusible. The phenolic polymer material which has generally been found suitable in carrying out the present invention is characterized by the presence of free hydroxyl groups and the absence of groups such as methylol, which tend to promote infusibility or cross-linking of the polymer, and by the solubility of the material in organic solvents and relative insolubility in aqueous media. Mixtures of these phenolic polymers can of course be used.
Resols can be used if they still remain soluble even if they are exposed to changes in properties during aging.
A laboratory method useful in selecting suitable phenolic resins is a determination of the infrared absorption pattern. It has been found that phenolic resins exhibiting adsorption in the 3200 - 3500 cm"<1> range (indicative of free hydroxyl groups) and no adsorption in the 1600 - 1700 cm <1> range are suitable. The latter adsorption region indicates desensitizing the hydroxyl groups which consequently makes such groups unavailable for reaction with the chromogenic materials.
Solvents for these phenolic materials are usually organic solvents of relatively high volatility and low toxicity, and among these are the following compounds: normal butanol, ethanol, hexane, heptane, toluene, xylene, ethylene glycol monomethyl ether, ethylene glycol monomethyl ether, ethylene glycol diacetate, ethylene glycol dibutyl ether, ethylene glycol dimethyl ether, ethylene glycol monoacetate , ethylene glycol monobenzyl ether, ethylene glycol monobutyl ether (2-hydroxyethanol), ethylene glycol monoethyl ether acetate, ethylene glycol monoethyl ether acetate, ethylene glycol monophenyl ether ethyl acetate, and mixtures of these solvents. The above-mentioned solvents also regulate the viscosity of the printing ink.
It is to be understood that the above-mentioned solvents are to be used when applying and driving down the phenolic material and are not necessarily used as a solvent carrier to facilitate the reactive contact between color-forming components. In the latter case, the liquid solvent must be able to dissolve both marking components. The solvent selected should be able to dissolve at least 0.03% by weight of the chromogenic material and a corresponding amount of polymeric material to give an effective reaction. In the preferred system, however, the solvent should be able to dissolve an excess polymer material in order to achieve every possibility of utilizing the chromogenic material and thus ensure maximum color formation at the reaction sites.
Although phenolic polymer materials are mentioned in the foregoing, it is clear that other soluble, film-forming, chemically reactive acidic polymer materials fall within the scope of the invention. Furthermore, other materials may be added to the polymeric coating or film to take advantage of its unique structure and among such materials may be microscopic capsules containing the liquid chromogenic ink that can react with the polymeric coating or film.
