Description
Procedure for building a reservoir for storing liquids at atmospheric pressure and temperatures that are far below the freezing point of water.
Oppfinnelsen angår grunnmågasiner for flytende gasser, dvs. magasinering av flytende gasser ved meget lave temperaturer i en oventil trinnformet, åpen utgravning i grunnen, og opp-finnelsens primære formål er å skaffe en fremgangsmåte ved bygging av en ny type murfunda-mfent for en væske- og gasstett vegg som omgir The invention relates to foundations for liquefied gases, i.e. the storage of liquefied gases at very low temperatures in an overhead stepped, open excavation in the ground, and the primary purpose of the invention is to provide a method for building a new type of masonry foundation for a liquid - and gas-tight wall that surrounds

grunnmågasiner som i det vesentlige er store ground sea gasses which are essentially large
groper som ér utgravd i grunnen på samme måte pits that are excavated in the ground in the same way
som de som graves for de deler av bygninger som such as those which are dug for those parts of buildings which
liggér under grunnen. These magazines have diameters of more than 30 m and are more than 30 m deep.
The magazines are covered by a liquid- and gas-tight roof that is suitably insulated, and are used to store the liquefied gas at temperatures from -40° C to -160° C or even lower. Where these pits are excavated in water-saturated soil, the natural moisture will cause the soil to freeze so that a liquid-tight, frozen wall of great thickness is formed, e.g. from three to six metres, and the wall also forms a liquid-tight, insulating barrier so that the liquid can be kept at an extremely low temperature. The typical terrain in the USA and in many other countries where such reservoirs are built consists of a relatively thin layer of soil of from 4.5 to 15 m thick, which lies above a relatively hard and impermeable bedrock. Excavation of the overlying soil layer is therefore not only carried out, but the excavation in some cases extends down to more than 45 m. The overlying soil layer contains water up to the groundwater level in the particular place where the excavation is carried out, except during and after heavy rain, as the ground near the surface is usually relatively dry and does not contain sufficient moisture to form a reliable liquid seal when it freezes. It is therefore desirable, and in many places necessary, to create an impermeable wall at the upper part of the base reservoir to ensure that the contents of liquid and gases are held back in the reservoir. This wall can be made of many different materials, but the cheapest material for the purpose is usually concrete. However, a concrete wall is very heavy and must be placed on a suitable foundation that provides sufficient support. Under the conditions that often occur in practice, this presents surprisingly great difficulties.
A preferred method for designing at least the upper part of the above-described magazine consists in freezing a large ring that circumscribes the desired magazine and then removing the soil within the ring. This method results in the creation of a rigid layer of soil outside the part to be excavated, whereby there is no need for shoring or formwork against the soil wall of the reservoir to prevent it from falling or sliding inwards and pumping is avoided. It should be noted that during normal use the soil will be kept well below the freezing point of the contents, and it is therefore only initially necessary to keep the soil frozen until the finished container is filled with liquefied gas.
In the case described above, the ring on which a foundation for the heavy concrete wall is made must be determined according to the upper circumference of the magazine. A normal poured concrete foundation is used, but if this is poured before the soil is frozen, there is a high probability that the foundation will move differently in different places as the digging progresses, due to irregular volume changes in the soil layer when it's freezing. But if the concrete is poured after the ground is frozen, the temperature is so low that the cement will not harden properly. While the cement hardens, at the same time the cement's heat of hydration will serve to destroy the frozen layer by thawing it.
The method according to the invention thus includes pre-freezing a ring of liquid-containing soil or ground, which is located at the surface of the field or ground, excavation of a storage pit in the ground within the ring, arrangement of an exposed ring-shaped horizontal surface in the ground around the perimeter of the pit below ground level, and the method is characterized by placing a plastic bed of low-temperature grease and particles of a suitable inert filler material on the exposed surface, placing prefabricated concrete sections end to end on the bed, so that a continuous foundation is formed on the ring-shaped horizontal surface, which concrete sections are prestressed to at least partially achieve compensation for thermal stresses due to the low temperatures, that a wall is erected in a known manner on the foundation sections and an appropriate cover is installed which is sealed to the wall.

Figur 8 viser forbindelsen mellom to funda-mentenheter. Figure 1 shows a general outline for a magazine designed according to the invention. The main part of the pit is made in an impermeable rock layer 2 or at least in a layer of hard and essentially impermeable ground which can consist of several sharply separated layers. Above the layer 2 there is a layer consisting of soil or another relatively easily permeable base material which is naturally or artificially saturated with water up to a level 4 which is higher than the bottom of the foundation 8 which will be described below. The surface level can be the natural ground level or it can be a level that is made higher by soil from the excavated part being used to build up part of the reservoir structure. Around the perimeter of the pit, cooling pipes are arranged in concentric circles with e.g. 15 cm diameter, which, before filling the magazine, is supplied with a suitable coolant of a temperature sufficiently low to keep about a meter of the soil on each side of the pipes in a frozen state. After the soil has acquired a suitable frozen state and thickness, digging is continued until the pit has the desired dimensions, as the cylinder of frozen soil acts as a formwork against the soil outside. After the pit is shaped. a cut is made in the soil layer below the groundwater level, as shown at 7, and this soil layer is covered with a layer of about 5 cm of sand and grease, after which the blocks 8; which will serve as a cushion and foundation, is set in place with the help of a crane. These blocks are quite large, e.g. about. 90 cm wide, 45 cm high and 4.5 m long. They are made as ready-cast, reinforced and prestressed concrete blocks and are designed so that the thermal stresses are practically compensated by the prestressing. The blocks have grooves and springs that hold them in place. The grease and sand mixture 8 has such a composition that it will remain plastic at the low temperatures maintained during the build-up of the magazine. The foundation 8' supports a wall 9 which normally extends from approx. 1 m below ground level to approx. 1 m above, and the wall 9 again supports or is connected to a per se known roof construction 11 which does not belong to the present invention. The wall 9 can be made of any suitable material, e.g. of metal,
Det er kjent kunstig grease som har den passende sammensetning, og det fins militære spesifikasjoner for slike grease-blandinger som består av voks og olje. but practical and economic factors dictate that concrete is used, which is usually the cheapest material that is sufficiently resistant under the prevailing conditions. In the present construction, the wall 9 is made up of several ready-cast, vertically prestressed concrete slabs 9a, 9b etc., as shown in fig. 3. These plates are mounted vertically using a crane and fit together edge-to-edge, using a suitable tongue and groove connection 10 where this is desired. The lower edge of the plates is supported in an annular channel 13 which is formed on top of the foundation 8'. The channel 13 is filled with artificial grease with a mixture suitable for the temperature used and which serves both as lubrication between foundation and wall and also as a liquid- and gas-tight seal at low temperatures. There are known artificial greases that have the appropriate composition, and there are military specifications for such grease mixtures consisting of wax and oil.
After the entire wall has been assembled, it is wrapped with several steel wires or cables 14 which are under considerable tension to further bias the circular wall in the radial direction. Then the outer, wrapped surface can be suitably sprayed with a mortar, shotcrete or plastered in a similar way both to seal the outer surface of the wall and to protect the cables against corrosion. On the outside or on the inside (or on both sides), a suitable and desired insulation can also be installed, and the wall is completed by installing a flexible cover or shell.
In order to limit the displacement of the foundation blocks 8', these can be anchored to the cooling pipes 6 as shown at 16.
It should be noted that the connection between the foundation blocks 8' and the wall is such that the wall can retract radially inwards when the temperature drops when filling the magazine. The rise-only grease mixture 13 allows a relative radial movement between the wall and the foundation while the wall is essentially held in place.
As a possible alternative construction, the wall can be cast directly onto the foundation once the foundation has been installed. However, this will be more difficult than using the method with pre-cast slabs due to the high temperature stresses that occur at the low temperatures that prevail around the foundation at this stage of the construction (-40° C). When the tank is filled, the temperature will drop further to approx. -160° C, whereby the concrete will contract a lot. This causes large tensile stresses so that the entire construction will be able to crack in pieces. The prestressing process described above will put the entire concrete wall in such a state of tension to begin with that it counteracts the tension produced by the contraction due to the temperature drop, and the prestressing therefore counteracts the destructive effect of the contraction. The destructive effect of such stresses can be reduced by making the wall as thin as possible, and for a magazine of approximately 60 m diameter, the wall thickness can suitably be approximately 20 cm. The wall can be made with such a small thickness and still have the necessary strength, just because of the prestressing.
Det vil forstås at slike Fig. 4 shows a ground plan of one of the foundation sections. This section is made curved so that the assembled foundation will form a circle-shaped annular surface on which the wall is placed. A typical length of a foundation section is approximately 5.7 m for a storage tank with a diameter of 34.5 m. For this tank size, the foundation was 90 cm wide and 60 cm high. It will be understood that such
massive seksjoner må håndteres ved hjelp av forholdsvis kraftige kraner. massive sections must be handled using relatively powerful cranes.
Several rectangular recesses 21 have been formed in the annular gutter 13 to facilitate the assembly of the wall panels, the joints for these coming over the recesses 21. After assembly, the recesses 21 are filled with a thin mortar. The annular channel 13 is filled with artificial grease after the wall has been put in place.
Scrn shown in fig. 7 and 8, the ends of the foundation sections are suitably locked together and preferably as shown at 22 and 23, so that the tongue and groove connection maintains proper alignment. The ends of the foundation blocks are smeared with artificial grease as the sections are placed in place, so that any possibility of moisture penetrating is excluded before the temperature of the tank is lowered.
