Abstract
A valve, esp. a ball valve in a train of pipes, has a closing mechanism and an auxiliary, hydraulically-operated mechanism which engages with and displaces the closing mechanism to reinforce its action. The auxiliary mechanism is subjected to the pressure in the flow passage beneath the valve, and/or that outside the housing. The valve is designed for lowering on the train of pipes through a blow-out-preventer shaft at the upper end of an underwater borehole. It comprises a housing with a through passage for a flow, in which a valve body, such as a ball can be moved between an open and a closed position. The valve is moved from the the closed to the open position by a mechanism energised by hydraulic fluid delivered by a pilot line from the surface, and if the pilot pressure falls off, the valve is return to the closed position. Arrangement provides a valve and auxiliary equipment which ensures that the valve can be returned to the fully closed condition even under the most difficult circumstances.
