Abstract

Synergistic mixts. for suppressing smoke formation during the burning of polymeric materials are comprised of a mixt. of an organic amine molybdate and cupric sulphate. The mixts. are made by first contacting an organic amine (I) and a Mo cpd. (II) chosen from MoO3 and molybdic acid in an reaction medium so that at least part of the (I) and at least part of the (II) react to form an amine molybdate (III). Cupric sulphate and oxalic acid are then contacted in the same reaction medium and in the presence of the (III), so that greater than part of these reactants react to form cupric oxalate (IV) and H2SO4. The (III) and (IV) formed are insol. in the reaction medium and ppte. together as a single physical entity with the (III) and (IV) in intimate physical contact. The synergistic mixts. are obtd. in finely divided form for direct incorporation as smoke suppressing additives in polymer compsns., esp. PVC, PVdC and copolymers of vinyl chloride. The mixts. have a synergistic effect on reducing the amts. of smoke and other pyrolysis prods. released into the air during the burning and pyrolysis of the polymeric base.
