Abstract

Polycarbonamide fibres are made from an anisotropic spinning soln. contg. (a) a polycarbonamide with repeating units (I) or (I) and (II). (b) N,N-dimethylacetamide (III) and/or hexamethylphosphoramide (IV) and/or N-methylpyrrolidone-2 and/or N,N,N',N'-tetramethylurea as solvent and (c) LiCl -or CaCl2. After spinning, the fibres are stretched, opt. at 200-650 degrees C, to 1.01 to 1.5 times their length directly after spinning. The fibres have a high initial modulus of more than 1530 g/tex and an angle of orientation of not more than 40 degrees. The fibres are esp. useful in the prodn. of tyre cords and as reinforcing fibres in plastic laminates which are used eg in the prodn. of skis, handles, golf club carriers, etc. The spinning soln. may also be extruded into films or fibrids. The fibrids may be formed into paper by pressing.
