Abstract

A detergent contains >=1 surfactant, an alkaline carbonate and an acid which forms water-soluble Ca or Mg salts or complexes. The acid and alkali are present separately, the acid constituent dissolving more quickly in the alkaline bath than the alkaline constituent. The alkaline constituent is in excess w.r.t. the acid. The acid constituent contains 5-30 wt.% w.r.t. the total detergent compsn. of an acid with pK1 2.8-4.8, and dissolves in the bath such that, with a progressively increasing temp., the pH is 2-5 before it reaches 25 degrees C. At least 5 wt.%, w.r.t. the total detergent, of alkaline carbonate is present, which hardly dissolves 40 degrees C, but is all dissolved by 60 degrees C, giving the liq. a pH of 9-10.5. Opt. the compsn. is contained in a plastic sachet having acrylic/polyethylene glycol joints. Ecologically harmful constituents such as phosphates are excluded from the detergent. Carbonate deposits do not build up, because they are destroyed at the start of each washing cycle. Only a relatively low concn. of acid is required.
