Abstract

The strings (a, b) on a tennis racket are provided with tubular sleeves (g, h) such that the sleeves are able to slide on the strings over a certain distance. At the crossing points the plastic sleeves are fused together so that they are fixed relative to each other. The sleeves on the longitudinal strings are in one piece over the full length of the string, whilst the lateral sleeves (h) are in short sections so that a small gap remains between each sleeve section. When a tennis ball is hit with this type of racket, a slight cut during impact causes the strings which are in contact with the ball to be deflected. This produces ball spin, which is otherwise difficult to obtain by a moderately skilled player.
