Abstract

The float part of a semi-submersible work platform for oil and gas exploration consists of an endless hollow section with >=1 rising column to which the work deck is attached so that, in the submerged condition, the deck remains the prescribed distance above the water level and the float the prescribed distance below it. The cross-section of the float ring is pref. circular or oval shaped. The central column may be used to house the work floor, turntable and drilling gear and all of the machinery and tanks may be incorporated into float section. As a result, the centre of gravity of the total structure is significantly lowered, the work deck only being used for the derek, cranes and helicopter deck. That part of the structure which is submerged is pref. built of concrete. To facilitate construction, the ring shaped float is built of separate sealed compartments in a floating dock so that, as each compartment is finished, it may be floated out of the dock and the next segment can be built onto it. The structure is able to carry a given load with a lower centre of gravity than the conventional semi-submersible rig with the consequence that less water ballast is required and a smaller overall structure is achieved with an increased stability.
