Abstract

The functioning of a fluid separator depends upon the difference in transparency of the fluids. A light-sensitive circuit is used to monitor the transparency of a fluid passing along a pump suction line, and a relay either starts or stops the pump. The light source and the detector may be installed in the pump line, or inside the pump itself, or the pump suction line may be interrupted by a section through which light can pass; the light sensitive element and the light source being positioned outside this section. The pump may be operated by an electronic circuit instead of a relay. The system is used for the protection of the environment by providing an automatic control of the bilge pump jettisoning water coming in along the screw shaft, so that as soon as oil appears in the line, the pump is switched off and a signal is put out. The control of industrial operations may be carried out by similar means.
