Abstract

The rollers are fabricated by coating a passive master roller with a 50-500 mu layer of Ni, removing the Ni sleeve from the master roller and then electrolytically depositing a Cu coating. The Cu coating is then machined to the required thickness (>=5 mu), and a layer of Cr is deposited. After removal of the Ni jacket from the master roller, the jacket is pref. filled with an air or water bag to lend it some structural stability for the subsequent operation. A flat print roller pref. has a Ni layer of 200-300 mu a Cu layer of 5-10 mu and a Cr layer of 0.5-3 mu. A deep print roller pref. has a Ni layer of 100-200 mu, a Cu layer of 50-500 mu and a Cr layer of 3-25 mu. The print pattern on a deep print roller can be replaced by machining the Cu to below the etching depth, depositing a new Cu layer, etching this as required and then Cr plating. The flexible, thin walled rollers are cheap to store and transport, whilst the risk of impact damage is minimised.
