Abstract

A device is incorporated into the top construction of a blast furnace with which the location and distribution of the charge can be determined and controlled. The device consists of two radar antennas, a transmitter and a receiver. The antennas are mounted on ball joints so that they can be rotated in any direction w.r.t. the joints. The travel time of each pulse yields the location of the uppr surface of the furnace charge and by ranging the transmitter and receiver across the surface of the charge, the profile can be determined. By incorporating the two antennas into a rotating funnel incorporating a variable angle of chute, the profile can be adjusted in response to the profile defined by the antennas. Currently available technology will only determine the height of the charge in the furnace. Irregularities in the profile lead to considerable variations in the gas flow through the furnace and consequent inefficient operation. Using the device, the proper distribution of the charge can be ensured.
