Abstract

Appts. comprises a horizontal cylinder having a heated wall and an agitating means for wiping the beads along the wall. A pressurised air source is connectible to the cylinder to increase the press. on the particles to prevent further expansion when the desired degree of expansion is reached. The pre-expanded beads, still under pressure, are either conveyed to a storage device for subsequent use or are conveyed directly to a mould where expansion is completed. The beads are uniformly pre-expanded and uniformly fill the mould to give an expanded article of uniform density and properties. Beads of conventional polymeric material such as polystyrene can be used and high and low density articles equally easily produced.
