Abstract

Prepn. of nicotinamide (I) is carried out by (a) passing an aq. soln. of 3-cyanopyridine (II) over a basic anion exchanger in the OH- form, and (b) extracting the reaction mixt. with an organic solvent to obtain an aq. soln. of (I). (The hourly space velocity is pref. 0.2-1.5g of (II) per mol of ion exchanger. The feed soln. pref. contains 5-50 wt % of (II). The reaction temp. is pref. 25-60 degrees C. The ion exchanger is pref. a strongly basic type, e.g. 'Dowex 1 x 4' or 'Imac S-5-50'. The extraction solvent can be e.g. pet, ether, toluene, benzene, CHCl3 or ether, esp. toluene). The process is less expensive to operate than that of PO 78808, and the prod. can be recovered by evaporating the aq. soln. (rather than cystn.). Once-through conversions of 47-83% can be obtained, with 91-97% selectivity for (I).
