Abstract
A non-petroleum organic liq. is hydrogenated and purified by first refining it to remove gross impurities. The refined product is mixed with a finely divided hydrogenation catalyst and a finely dispersed absorbent. Hydrogenation occurs in the presence of hydrogen at an elevated temp. to produce a hydrogenated product carrying the entrained catalyst and solid absorbent. The mixt. is subjected to electrofiltration in an oxygen-free atmosphere for the complete removal of the hydrogenation catalyst and solid absorbent from the hydrogenated product. the resulting product is solids-free and colour improved. There is no mechanical filtration of the liq. and associated problems are avoided. The process gives substantially complete removal of even very small suspended solids.
