Abstract

A totally enclosed rechargeable electrochemical cell includes an amount of electrochemically active material of the negative electrode which is greater than that of the positive electrode. When the positive electrode is completely discharged, the electrochemically active material of the negative electrode is present partly as a hydride (ie in a charged state) as far as this excess is concerned. This maintains a reversible equilibrium in the cell under any circumstances so that the occurrence of high gas pressures in the case of overcharging or overdischarging is eliminated.
