Abstract
In the prodn. of melamine, urea or its thermal decompsn. prods. are heated in a fluidised bed of a catalytically active material in the presence of ammonia or an NH3-contg. gas at 100-2500 kPa. The appts. has a sieve plate or similar fitting which divides the catalyst bed into a lower and an upper zone. In the lower zone, the urea is converted into melamine at 325-425 degrees C. The upper zone is maintained at a temp. of at least the temp. in the lower zone. The sieve plate allows a catalyst flux with it is 5-75% of the catalyst flux across a corresp. open surface without sieve plate. Process allows max. effective utilisation of the heat of reaction and gives theoretical yields of >95% theory. It is possible to approach or to achieve thermodynamic equilibrium for the process.
