Abstract

A coherent plastic substance is moulded mechanically into a form which is symmetrical around its axes, esp. into a ball of mince for culinary purposes; a suitable quantity of the substance being shaped in a band tool into a ball from which it is ejected automatically. The material is compacted all round by pressure in a mould practically filled with the substance, which can be fully closed, whilst, during the closing and opening of the mould, the whole surface of the substance forming the ball is exposed to thrust pressure from the mould walls. The pressure to which the material is exposed, is a rotary one contributing to the formation of the ball, applied by the mould walls which rotate during closing and opening. As the ball is released by the opening of the mould, contact between it and the mould is interrupted directly and completely by clamps which hold the ball until it can be removed from the mould by the force of gravity. The device has the form of a pair of tongs with the mould closed by two half jaws which are held normally open by a spring between the hinged handles. The mould is formed by two dies through the bottom faces of which a clamping peg projects, the the two pegs grip the finished ball. The moulds and the clamping pegs are connected mechanically to the elements for rotating the moulds, so that, during closing and opening the distance between the opposing ends of the pegs can be increased or reduced. The device is a much simpler mechanism than modified mincing machines and does not become fouled up with deposits of the tacky substance. It can be used conveniently in small cafes, snack bars, etc., as well as by the housewife.
