Abstract

Display cell with memory effect has a housing, with a transparent wall section, contg. a reversibly reducible redox cpd. (I) dissolved in an electrochemically inert liq. (II) in contact with >=2 electrodes. (II) is a mixt. of water and an inert organic solvent (IIa) and (Ie is a 4,4'-bipyridine cpd. of formula (Ia) or a bipyridine cpd. of formula (Ib)(where R1 and R2 are 4-8C alkyl; R3 and R4 are 1-4C alkyl or benzyl; X- is ClO4', NO3', H2PO4' or BF4'; Y- is ClO4', BF4', H2PO '4 or PF6') or a bipyridien polymer (Ic), obtd. by reacting 4,4'-bipyridyl and alpha, omega-dibromobutane in a polar aprotic solvent and then replacing the Br ion by a ClO'4, H2PO4 degrees or BF4' ion, Solvent (IIa) acts as antifreeze.
