Abstract

Prodn. of nitrogen monoxide comprises contacting an aq. soln. of ammonium nitrite with a mineral acid at 0-60 degrees C whilst maintaining the pH at 3.5 and with intensive stirring, and recovering the resulting gas, opt. after washing with alkali. Pref. reaction is carried out at 10-35 degrees C and a pH of 2.5 in a medium contg. 60-80 wt.% water. The starting soln. of ammonium nitrite may contain ammonium carbonate and the resulting gas is washed with an aq. ammonia soln., the washings being used to make further ammonium nitrite soln. The process gives nitrogen monoxide from relatively cheap raw materials. The prod has a low nitrogen dioxide content and is therefore suitable for reduction to hydroxylamine, which is used for the prodn. of cyclohexanoneoxime, from which caprolactam and nylon-6 can be made.
