Abstract

Small amts. of heat-coagulable substances are removed from an aq. medium, esp. from potato draining water, by (a) ultrafiltration through synthetic polymer membranes which can be formed into tubular membranes, followed by (b) heating. Ultrafiltration raises the content of heat-coagulable substances in the liquid to be treated. As a result of the higher concn., the heat-coagulable substances are removed to a considerable extent, or almost completely. The remaining liq. can be released into surface waters. The membranes can process large vols. of liquid/hour; large installations are thus not needed. The membranes can be cleaned with hypochlorite soln. The coagulated protein is obtd. in good yield and can be utilised.
