Abstract

An arrangement for pressing meat such as ham into cans for transport has a filling chamber which can be loaded with the meat, and this has a movable cover by which the contents can be pre-compressed. A pressing plunger is provided to compact the charge and push it out of the filling chamber into the cans. The filling chamber and the space around the can may be enclosed into a common sealed chamber onto which a vacuum can be laid whilst the meat is being pressed. The filling chamber has a fixed bottom and two fixed lengthways running sides facing each other. The cover making a gas-tight seal has a section moving up and down and applies, at choice, either a downwards press. on the moving detail, so that when the cover is closed, a pre-loading can be exerted on the meat, or a lifting action relieving the press. wholly or in part. The means of applying press. include change-over valves with pipe fittings to the enclosed chamber in the cover above the section which can be lifted or lowered, so that it can be connected to vacuum, atmos.; here, or to a source of over-press. The cover supports the section which can be lifted up and down via. a membrane, and this section of the cover fits neatly between the two side walls. Monitors are provided which give the signal for the cover section to apply press. and operate a timer which delays to opening until the under press. has acted for some time.
