Abstract

Prodn. of light olefins by steam cracking of straight-run naphtha and/or gas oil feeds is carried out in >=2 stages. In the 1st stage, part of the feed is cracked with at least the majority of the steam required to crack the total feed. In successive stages, the rest of the feed and any remaining steam is added to the already cracked mixt. The rest of the feed is pref. added in 2 successive stages. Compared with processes in which the whole of the feed and steam are reacted at once, the process gives increased ethylene yields without increased CH4 prodn.
