Abstract

Titanium dioxide is made by a process comprising (1) adding an organic solvent (A) to an aq. soln. which has been previously treated after dissolution of primary matls., with sulphuric acid to extract metallic ions such as Cr3+ and Nb5+; (2) sepg. Ti ions from the aq. soln. formed by hydrolysis according to known methods; (3) adding an organic solvent (B) to the aq. soln. formed to extract the Ti ions; (4) adding an organic solvent (C) to the aq. soln. formed to extract as Fe3+ ions remaining after oxidn. of Fe2+ ions and sepn. of the Ti ions; (5) adding an organic solvent (d) to the aq. soln. formed to extract V ions by extracting practically all the heavy metal ions and using the regenerated acid to dissolve the primary matl. at the beginning of the concn. process. Numerous valuable by-prods. of the extraction of TiO2 from ilmenite, steel making slags etc., are recovered while the amt. of H2SO4 used is reduced drastically with considerable cost reductions, and reducing or avoiding pollution altogether.
