Abstract
Process for lowering the sulphur cpd. content of effluent gases from claus installations, resulting from the final sepn. of free sulphur, is characterised in that. The amt. of O2 used to burn the H2S in the claus installation is at most such that the amt. of SO2 formed during the combustion and which remains after stage (c) is so small that it does not impede the later SO2 sepn. stage of the process. The effluent gas from the claus installation is cooled by a liquid so that the cooled effluent gas can be subjected to stage (d) of the process. The effluent gas from the claus installation is contacted with a liquid which absorbs SO2 from the effluent gas and allows this to react with H2S which is simultaneously absorbed, to form sulphur. The SO2 remaining in the effluent gas after stages (a)-(c) have been carried out, is separated. The process allows operation of the installation with a very low amt. of sulphur cpds. in the effluent gas, thus overcoming atmospheric pollution problems.
