Abstract

Binder system for stoving finishes comprises (a) an alkyd resin, (b) an amino resin, (c) an acid catalyst and (d) 20-100 pts. (per 100 pts. (a)) of a polyalkylene glycol of formula HO-CH(R)-CH2-O-(CH(R)-CH2-O-)n-CH(R)-CH2OH (I), in which R=H, Me or Et and n = 1-10. Pref. the (I) is a polyethylene glycol with an average mol. wt. of 360-420 or a polypropylene glycol with an average mol. wt. of 500-800. Binders are useful in the prodn. of varnishes, stove enamels and printing inks which cure e.g. in 20-60 sec at 195-220 degrees C or in 1-20 mins at 150-195 degrees C into hard glossy finishes with good adhesion to substrates such as iron, steel and tin cans.
